UCM (Unintended Car Movement) test instructions for

Hydraulic Lifts
1. Considerations before UCM test

1.a. Relevant staff shall take necessary precautions for the safety of the passengers as well as himself of all
actions at risk.

Prevent the elevator run by someone else,

Be sure that there is nobody in the elevator shaft (hoist way),
Be sure that all elevator doors are closed.

1.b. UCM test function exists if the firmware version of ARL700 is 25.09.2017 and later. This function shall
be used for UCM test. The firmware updating shall be done for older versions of the devices. (See ARL700
Easy Installation Manual).

1.c. In order to simulate the worst load condition in UCM test:

- The full loaded car is moved in down direction at the top of the shaft.

1.d. "UCM TEST" mode is activated as follows:

Note: This test document is prepared to perform with buttons on ARL700

- ENT button is pressed on ARL700.

- "ENTER PASSWORD" If the password wasn’t changed
factory values are “000000”. Press ENT after enter password.

2. Choosing of UCM test speed:

Press up/down buttons to select test in slow speed(V0) or full-speed(V3). The counter will count down in
the message “Fast test 59s” or "Slow test 59s" . The test must be performed in 60 seconds otherwise it
will be cancelled.

3. Preparing to the test

3.a. Press ESC button until back to main screen after seen “test active 59s” on the screen.
3.b. UCM test shall be done with doors closed for safety purposes!!!! But open doors shall be
simulated during testing. After count down 60 seconds (ARL700 will bridge the doors). The open
doors can be simulated by disconnecting 130 or 140 signal (doors safety circuit signals) on KBK-12.

3.c. During the test, the car shall be moved with down button on the recall hand terminal.

E86: UCM DETECTED 3.d. At the end of UCM test, ARL700 gives “E86: UCM
PERMNT FLOOR: x DETECTED” error and blocks the lift permanently. This error can’t
be cleared even if the power is switched off and on. The system will
not turn to the normal run mode without clearing the permanent
Note: x shows current floor error with a special action. To clear the permanent errors, the
Position. following actions shall be performed:
3.e. Press ENT button to enter menu. Press down button until see

“ERORR LOGS” press ENT button. Press down button until see
Clear perm. Err.
“Clear prem. Err.” Press ENT button. Back to main screen
pressing by ESC button. The message “E86: UCM DETECTED”
message will stay in the screen but message “PERMNT” will be
turned to “BLOCKED”.
E86: UCM DETECTED
BLOCKED FLOOR: x - To back normal operation recall key is turned to “INSPECTION”
and then “NORMAL” mode or power is switched off and on.

4. UCM (Unintended Car Movement) test procedure

4.a. UCM test in up direction with full load car

The following steps shall be performed in order.

- Move the car to the top floor.

- Full load the car (see 1.c).
- Enable "UCM TEST" mode (See. 1.d).
- After starting the countdown, remove the connection from terminal 130 or 140 on the KBK-12 board (See.
3.a and 3.b).
- The car is moved by keeping pressed down direction button on the recall hand terminal (See. 3.c).
- After leaving the door zone, door bridging circuit hardware will open, because the 130 or 140 signals are
interrupted. The power of the UCM safety valve is also cut off emergency UCM stop occurs. ARL700 gives
“E86: UCM DETECTED” error and the lift is kept out of service permanently.
- The stopping distance is measured. Test is successful if the stopping distance is within acceptable values.
- The power is switched off and on. It is observed that the permanent UCM error still continues.
- The permanent error is cleared (See. 3.e).
- It is observed that the lift turned to the normal run mode.
- Test is finished.
5. Calculation of the stopping distance in case of UCM in downward direction

5.a. Dual door-zone monitoring unit

When at least one of the door-zone signals goes off (ML1 signal in downward movement, ML2 signal in
upward movement), it is detected that the car is outside the door-zone.

ML1 & ML2: Door-zone magnetic switches

Manufacturer / Model: ARKEL / MTM
Description: Electronic mono-stable magnetic switch
Pcb version: 1.2
Conformity: EN 81-20 clause 5.11.2.5

Xdz (length of the door-zone magnet): 30cm.

This might be too much for the application and needs then to be shortened to fit into the total system and
finally stop the lift within the required distances of A3.

5.b. Response time of the components:

Component Response time

(max.)
ARL-700 door-bridging circuit Panasonic-NAIS SFS3-DC24V or 10 ms
Omron G7SA-3A1B DC24
ML1 door-zone magnetic switch ARKEL MTM 10 ms

The chart below shows the theoretical curve of the car in case of UCM in worst case:

Note: This calculation was prepared for Hydronic H300+HSV UCM valve. If the UCM valve isn’t that
combination vmax and Xhsv values must be taken from relevant document.
V (m/s)

vmax = 1.3 m/s

Xdz X1 X2 Xhsv

t1 t2 t (s)

Xdz: Max. door zone = 200 mm

t1: Max. response time of the ML1 magnetic switch = 10 ms

X1: Vmax * t1 = 1,3 m/s * 10 ms = 13 mm

t2: Max. response time of the door-bridging circuit = 10 ms

X2: Vmax * t1 = 1,3 m/s * 10 ms = 13 mm

Xhsv: Max. breaking distance of the HSV safety valve = 750 mm (see note 1)

vmax = Maximum speed of a hydraulic lift when leaving the door zone = 1,3 m/s (see note 1)

Maximum total stopping distance in the worst case can be calculated as follows:

X(total) = Xdz + X1 + X2 + Xhsv = 200 + 13 + 13 + 750 = 976 mm

Note 1: The worst case in with the HSV must stop the lift is max car speed plus 0,3 m/s. For higher speed the
lift must be stopped by the pipe rupture valve. In the worst case this speed is 1,3 m/s. The Safety Valve HSV
has been designed so that, considering a speed of vmax of 1,3 m/s, maximum load and unfavourable oil
conditions, the lift will stop within 750 mm from the de-energising of the safety valve HSV solenoid 12:A.
