Dear mom and Dad,
We have some exiting news for you. Marie is going to have a baby! We didn’t tell you right away.
At first the doctor said she might have some trouble with the baby. Now he says she is just fine. She’s very
healthy and happy! She still works on her painting every day. But she stopped teaching art classes. She gets
tired more quickly now.
There is going to be another change in our lives. We’re moving back to New York! We wanted to be
closer to you and to Jane. It’s much nicer to be near the family for something important like a baby. Marie
grew up in Mexico, and she doesn’t have a family. So that makes you even important to us.
Marie is a little worry about working in New York. She will have to starts again there. In Italy her
painting are already popular. But I’m sure people will like them in New York, too. My job won’t be any
problem. I’m still going to work for The New York times. I’ll be writing about the United Nations in New
York.
We’re planning to move next month. See you then!
Love,
Chris

One fine evening a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a
wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest a while.
Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favorite plaything; and she was always tossing it up into the air,
and caught it again as it fell.
After a time she threw it up so high that she missed catching it as it fell; and the ball bounded away, and rolled
along on the ground, until at last it fell down into the spring. The princess looked into the spring after her ball, but it
was very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of it. She began to cry, and said, "Alas! If I could only get
my ball again, I would give all my new clothes and jewels, and everything that I have in the world."
Whilst she was speaking, a frog put its head out of the water, and said, "Princess, why do you weep so
bitterly?" "Alas!" Said she, "What can you do for me, you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring." The
frog said, "I do not want your pearls, and jewels, and fine clothes; but if you will love me, and let me live with you
and eat off your golden plate, and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball again." the bottom of it. She began to

A Mouse who always lived on the land, by an unlucky chance, formed an intimate acquaintance with
a Frog, who lived, for the most part, in the water.
One day, the Frog was intent on mischief. He tied the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own. Thus
joined together, the Frog led his friend the Mouse to the meadow where they usually searched for food.
After this, he gradually led him towards the pond in which he lived, until reaching the banks of the water, he
suddenly jumped in, dragging the Mouse with him.
The Frog enjoyed the water amazingly, and swam croaking about, as if he had done a good deed.
The unhappy Mouse was soon sputtered and drowned in the water, and his poor dead body floating about on
the surface.
A Hawk observed the floating Mouse from the sky, and dove down and grabbed it with his talons,
carrying it back to his nest. The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse, was also carried off a
prisoner, and was eaten by the Hawk.

39. Where did the Mouse and the Frog live?

a. They lived on the land.
b. The Mouse lived on the land and the Frog lived in the water.
c. They lived in the water.
d. They lived above the tree.
