MODULE 8.1: TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS OF ANGLES

ASSESSMENT NO.1
Instructions: Answer the following questions as required.
A. Conceptual Check: True or False explain your answer.
1. An angle can be defined as a union of two rays with a common endpoint.
• TRUE, the rays are called the sides of the angle while their common endpoint is called the
vertex.
2. The lengths of rays, say < 𝑃, determine the degree measure of < 𝑃.
• FALSE, in order to solve a missing angle, we need to provide 3 values of the triangle. This
requirement which leads to the following cases to remember: AAS, ASA, SSA, SAS and SSS.
3. Angles of 5° and −365° are conterminal.
• FALSE, 5° is not conterminal to −365° because if the given angle is positive, we need to
subtract 360° repeatedly until the results arrives at a positive angle less than or equal to 360°.
38𝜋
4. An example of a quadrantal angle is .
4
38𝜋
• TRUE, a quadrantal angles’ terminal sides land on an axis. is equal to 1710° which is a
4
3𝜋
conterminal to 270° which is equal to .
2
5. A central angle of 1 𝑟𝑎𝑑 in a circle of radius 𝑟 intercepts an arc length 𝑟.
• TRUE, the radius of a 1 rad circle is equivalent to the length of an arc of the circle.
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
6. The value of 𝑠𝑖𝑛90° = in a right triangle.
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
• FALSE, sin 90° should be equal to while should be equal 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃.
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
7. If 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝛽 < 0 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛽 > 0, then 𝛽 is an angle in quadrant 𝐼𝐼𝐼.
• FALSE, for 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝛽 and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛽 to be in Quadrant III, their values should be both negative. 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝛽 is
in positive and 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛽 is in negative, therefore it should be in Quadrant II.
8. In a right triangle with included angle 𝛾 and 𝛽, the value of sin 𝛾 = cos 𝛽, sec 𝛾 =
csc 𝛽, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 tan 𝛾 = cot 𝛽.
• TRUE, suppose these values depends on the angles which are given to the specific ratios of
the length of sides of a right triangle.

9. If we know the measures of two angles of a triangle, then the measure of the third angle is
determined.
• TRUE, A sum of interior angles of a triangle is 180°. Therefore if two angles of a triangle are
known, we can measure the third angle by subtracting the sum of the two angles from 180°.
10. If 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are the sides of any triangle, then 𝑐 2 = 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2.
• FALSE, 𝑐 2 = 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 is a Pythagorean theorem which only applies to right triangles.

B. Learning Applications: Answer the following questions as required.

1. Find the two positive angles and two negative angles that are conterminal with the −16° angle.
To find the conterminal angles, we need to add −16° from 360° for a positive
coterminal angle and add −16° from −360° for a negative conterminal angle.
2 POSITIVE ANGLES: 2 NEGATIVE ANGLES:
−16° + 360° = 344° −16° + (−360°) = −376°
344° + 360° = 704° 344° + (−360°) = −736°

the angle 𝛽.
Knowing two sies and a non-included angle is not sufficient for a unique triangle. It may
make two different triangles. Therefore, there are two possible solutions:

15. Calculate the length of the chord intercepted by a central angle of 19° in a circle that has a radius
of 30m.
GIVEN:
Central angle of 19° in a circle.
Sides a and b is 30m (radius of circle)
SOLUTION:
For Side-Angle-Side (SAS), we start using the law of cosines.
𝑐 2 = 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 − 2𝑎𝑏 cos 𝜃
𝑐 2 = (30) 2 + (30) 2 − 2(30)(30) cos 19°
𝑐 = √(30) 2 + (30) 2 − 2(30)(30) cos 19°
𝑐 = 9.9029 𝑚 𝑜𝑟 10𝑚
