NOUNS

Nouns are the names we give to things, places, feelings, thoughts, people, animals and
qualities that make up our experience of the world.

Common Nouns

Names of things, types of people, places, animals.


e.g: road, table, chair, cat, accountant, hospital

Proper Nouns

Proper nouns are the actual names we give to particular people, places, oraganisations,
products, job titles, days of the week, month.

E.g: Colombo, David Beckam, Sunday, Colombo International School, Prime Minister

Exercise 1: Circle the common nouns in the following sentences.

Exercise 2: Pick out the proper nouns in the following sentences.

Exercise 3: Fill in the gaps in the sentences with an appropriate common or proper noun.

Exercise 4: Pick out the nouns in the following headlines and say whether they are
common or proper nouns.
