DIRECTIONS: Research a nation that does not represent Enlightenment ideals currently, and
create some materials designed to rally its people around the goal of creating a more
representative form of government for their own country. Create ONE of the following: a poster
series (3 posters), a pamphlet, or a web page with links to other web pages. Whatever format
you choose, be sure to include images or graphics to make your message more compelling. Also,
include at least one slogan that the revolutionaries can use to encourage their fellow citizens

Suggested Project Steps

1 Find a nation that is ruled by an authoritarian government, and read about its situation.
2 Identify the issues that affect this nation’s people the most.
3 Choose an issue that people might be willing to fight to change or to influence.
4 Create a slogan or two related to the issue you chose.
5 Design your posters, pamphlet, or web page.
6 Create your materials, and share them with your classmates.

Step 1: Find a nation that is ruled by an authoritarian government, and read about its situation.
Look at print and online news journals for articles about countries that are controlled by
individuals or groups with absolute power. List and describe a few of these governments in the
chart below. When you have at least three listed, choose one of them to focus on for the rest of
the project.

Nations Description of Current Government

Argentina republic, representative democracy, federal republic,
presidential system, and constitutional republic

Egypt provisional government and democratic republic

Venezuela republic, federation, socialist state, federal republic,

presidential system, and constitutional republic

China republic, unitary state, socialist state, communist

state, and one-party state

Peru republic, unitary state, presidential system, and

constitutional republic

Step 2: Identify the issues that affect this nation’s people the most. For this step, you should have
chosen one nation to focus on. List the issues and describe how they affect the people of the
nation you selected. (For the American colonists, the issues were taxes, lack of representation in
government, England’s control over selecting its leaders.)

Issue How It Affects Ordinary Citizens

Deforestation lead to climate change which can be dangerous. It
can possibly lead to diseases! Hurricanes in
Argentina have doubled in the past three decades!

Pollution The soil is threatened by erosion, salinization, and

deforestation. The water supply is threatened by
uncontrolled dumping of pesticides, hydrocarbons,
and heavy metals.

Police Brutality They have killed innocent people because they are
brutal and violent

Poverty Affects 35.4% of people

Step 3: Choose an issue that people might be willing to fight to change or to influence. For the
American colonists, the key issue was taxation without representation.

Issue Why do you think people would be willing to fight to make this situation
better?
Pollution Reducing pollutants in the air is important for human
health and the environment. Poor air quality has
harmful effects on human health, particularly the
respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Pollutants
can also damage plants and buildings, and smoke
or haze can reduce visibility.

Step 4: Design your posters, pamphlet, or web page. You can create a sketch in the space below
or use a separate (print or digital) page.

Step 5: Create your materials, and share them with your classmates. This step should happen on
a page (or several pages) separate from this file. When you submit your work on this project to
your teacher, though, include this planning sheet.
