OPGC II Project – Wire Rope / Guardrail CriteriaNovember 2016

 Guardrail (Wire Rope) System means a barrier erected to prevent employees from falling to
lower levels.

 Leading edge of a floor, roof, or formwork for a floor or other walking/working surface which
such as a floor, roof, decking, or formwork sections that are placed, formed, or constructed.

 Where a leading edge is constructed 6 feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels, protection from
falling must be installed e.g. guardrail systems. A safety net system or personal fall arrest system
is also acceptable.

 Wall openings6 feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels and where the outside bottom edge of
the inside bottom edge of the wall opening is less than 39 inches (1.0 m) above the
walking/working surface, shall be protected from falling by the use of a guardrail system. A
safety net system or personal fall arrest system is also acceptable.

 Wire Rope (top rails &midrails) shall be at least one-quarter inch (0.6 cm) diameter or thickness
to prevent cuts and lacerations.

 Wire Rope maximum deflection of the top rail when a load of 200 pounds(890 N) is applied in
any direction at any point on the top rail shall not exceed 3 inches (7.62 cm) in one direction,
which includes the free hanging sag in the wire rope.

 Wire Rope top rails shall be flagged at not more than 6-foot intervals with high-visibility
material.

 Wire Rope / Guardrail (top rails &midrails)shall be capable of withstanding, without failure, a
force of at least 200 pounds (890 N) applied to the top edge in any outward or downward
direction, at any point along the top edge.

 Wire Rope / GuardrailMidrails shall be capable of withstanding a force of at least 150 pounds
(666 N) applied in any downward or outward direction at any point along the midrail.

 Wire Rope / Guardrail Systems are to be surfaced to prevent injury to an employee from
punctures or lacerations, and to prevent snagging of clothing.

 Wire Rope / Guardrail systems used around holes shall be erected on all unprotected sides or
edges of the hole.

 Wire Rope used as fall protection (horizontal lifeline):

o Lifeline installation the allowable sagging is 500 to 600 mm.

o The span is at least 6 m (20 ft.),when the clearance is limited and not more than 18 m (60
ft.), when the clearance in sufficient.

o The post/point in which the horizontal lifeline is to be installed, should be capable to sustain
a Tensile strength of 5000 lbs.(2268 kgs)

o Life line shall be 3 duck clamp both end as per standard.

o 5 clamps for splice with alternating clamps installation.

o Right way to install clamps. U clip on dead end of cable.

o In a single span Max Two man is allowed to work. If more than two person will work then
another horizontal lifeline is need to be installed.

o The horizontal lifeline is positioned so it does not impede the safe movement of workers.

o All the installation work shall be done by a competent person having adequate knowledge.
