JOB TITLE: Teaching Fellow – Hauora Māori

DEPARTMENT: Preventive and Social Medicine
SCHOOL AND DIVISION: Dunedin School of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences

Teaching Fellows support teaching or training by carrying out teaching and teaching-related
administration. The duties of this role are carried out under the supervision of the academic colleague
who is responsible for course design and delivery.

PRIME FUNCTIONS

To support hauora Māori teaching across under-graduate and post-graduate public health papers,
under the supervision of the academic colleague who is responsible for course design and delivery.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

 To ensure the delivery of high quality under-graduate and post-graduate hauora Māori public health
courses through assisting with preparation, delivery and assessment-related tasks.
 To contribute to Māori student support programmes in the Department of Preventive and Social
Medicine.
 To carry out teaching-related administration responsibilities.
 To contribute to the Department's academic goals, including the Department’s Māori Strategic Plan,
where appropriate.

KEY TASKS

 Prepare learning material for students including the production of coursebooks, handouts, and
preparation of class materials.
 Assist in the preparation of lectures, class discussions and tutorials.
 Deliver/lead some lectures, class discussions and tutorials.
 Assist with assessments by contributing questions or practical exercises and assisting with marking
and student feedback.
 Assist with managing the electronic learning platforms related to hauora Māori teaching, including
Moodle and Blackboard.
 Assist with recording results and assessment reporting, in accordance with Departmental and
University processes and guidelines.
 Provide individual students with support and assistance, as required.
 Assist in the delivery of the Department’s Māori student support programme.
 Ensure administrative processes are completed in a timely and efficient fashion.
 Undertake co-ordination duties related to hauora Māori teaching within the Department.
 Demonstrate and foster collegiality within the Department.
 Contribute to te reo Māori, tikanga and waiata sessions for Department staff, as appropriate.
 To carry out other relevant duties as determined by the Hauora Māori Teaching Co-ordinator and
Head of Department.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Teaching Fellow candidates are required to have:

 A Bachelor degree and relevant paper(s) in Māori health and/or development, public health or other
relevant discipline.
 A sound knowledge of hauora Māori and public health.
 An aptitude for effective teaching at tertiary level.
 Effective written and verbal communication skills.
 Excellent organisation and time management skills.
 An ability to work effectively as a member of a team, and independently.
 A commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and an appreciation of te reo Māori and
tikanga Māori.
