Case:
An 18 years- old patient was recently diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus after several days
of treatment with adjustment of diet, exercise and regular insulin he was placed on NPH 20
units, 30 minutes before breakfast and 10 before evening meal.

Questions:
a. What are the nursing interventions to be considered when administering an insulin.
● Monitor patient response to therapy (stabilization of blood glucose
levels).
● Monitor for adverse effects
● Evaluate patient understanding on drug therapy by asking the patient
to name the drug, its indication, and adverse effects to watch for.
● Monitor patient compliance to drug therapy.
b. The patient is having trouble injecting himself in a moment of frustration and asks “Why
can I take insulin pills like my grandfather, what is your response?
● You can't take it like a pill because normal digestion would destroy it.
c. As a nurse what is your responsibility to client situations, give your health teachings.
● Make healthy eating and physical activity part of your daily routine.
● Maintain a healthy weight.
● Monitor your blood sugar, and follow your doctor's instructions for
managing your blood sugar level.
● Take your medications as directed by your doctor.
