What This Module is About

Arts and crafts are important means of expression to one’s self through the
use of skill and imagination. This module is focused on the different Renaissance
and Baroque artworks wherein the learners would experience creating their own
masterpiece by applying different media technique and processes to communicate
ideas, experiences and stories showing the characteristics of the Renaissance and
the Baroque periods. With this, they will learn to appreciate and value arts and its
contribution during that era. This module is designed as well to provide learners with
various activities that would enhance the learning during this pandemic time either
with internet access or without internet access.

LEARNING AREA STANDARD


The learner demonstrates an understanding of basic concepts and processes in
music and art through appreciation, analysis and performance for his/her self-
development, celebration of his/her Filipino cultural identity and diversity, and
expansion of his/her world vision.

KEY - STAGE STANDARD


The learner demonstrates understanding of salient features of music and art of the
Philippines and the world, through appreciation, analysis, and performance, for self-
development, the celebration of Filipino cultural identity and diversity, and the
expansion of one’s world vision.

GRADE LEVEL STANDARD


The learner demonstrates understanding of salient features of Western music and
the arts from different historical periods, through appreciation, analysis, and
performance for self-development, the celebration of Filipino cultural identity and
diversity, and the expansion of one’s world vision.

The learner demonstrates:

- understanding of art elements and processes by synthesizing and applying


prior knowledge and skills
- understanding that the arts are integral to the development of organizations,
spiritual beliefs, historical events, scientific discoveries, natural
disasters/occurrences and other external phenomenon.

The learner:

- performs / participates competently in a presentation of a creative impression


(verbal/non-verbal) of a particular artistic period.
- recognizes the difference and uniqueness of the art styles of the different
periods (techniques, process, elements and principles of art).

What Is It
Famous Renaissance Artists:

1. MICHELANGELO DI LODOVICO BUONARROTI SIMONI


(1475-1564)
- An Italian Renaissance sculpture, painter, architect and
poet who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development
of Western art. He has considered the greatest living artist of all
time. One of his outstanding works as sculpture are Pieta,
Moses, Dying Slave. Michelangelo also created the most
influential works in Fresco of Western art: the scenes from
Genesis on the ceiling and the Last Judgement.

2. LEONARDO DI SER PIERO DA VINCI (1452-1519)


- Was a painter, architect, scientist and
mathematician. He was popularized in
present times through the novel and movie
“Da Vinci Code”. He is also known as
“Renaissance Man” because of his intellect,
interest, talent and his expression of
humanist and classical values.
-His well-known works were: The Last
Supper, Mona Lisa and
the Virgins of the Rocks.

3. RAFFAELLO SANZIO DA URBINO (RAPHAEL) (1483-1520)


-He is an Italian painter and architect of High Renaissance
Period. His artworks was admired for its clarity of form and ease for its
visual achievement of interpreting the Divine and incorporating Christian
doctrines. His main contribution to art were his unique draftsmanship and
compositional skills.
- The Transfiguration, The Sistine, Madonna were his famous works during the High
Renaissance period.
Famous Baroque Artist:

1. MICHELANGELO MERISI/ AMERGHI DA CARAVAGGIO (1571-


1610)
- An Italian artist active in Rome and wanted to deviate from
the classical masters of the Renaissance. His paintings, which
combined a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and
emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting, had a formative influence on
the Baroque school of painting.
- Among his famous paintings were: Supper at Emmaus, Conversion of St. Paul and
Entombment of Christ.

2. GIAN LORENZO BERNINI (1598-1680)


- He is known as the first Baroque Italian
artist and he practiced architecture, painting and
sculpture. His first artwork dated from his 8 th
birthday.
-Ecstasy of St. Teresa, sculpture of David
were some of his famous works. ----His sculpture
of David for Cardinal Borghese which is strikingly
different from Michelangelo’s David shows the
differences between
Renaissance and the Baroque period.
-Bernini is also recognized as greatest
Baroque sculpture and architect as seen in his
design of the Piazza San Pietro in front of the
Basilica. It is one of his most innovative and
successful architectural designs.

3. PETER PAUL RUBENS (1577-1640)


- a Flemish Baroque painter and a proponent of an
extravagant Baroque style that emphasized movement, color
and sensuality. He is well-known for his counter reformation,
portraits, landscapes and history of
paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
- His famous works are Samson and Delilah, Landscapes
with a Tower, Portrait of Helene Fourment and The Three Graces.

4. REMBRANDT HARMENSZOON VAN RIJN (1606-1669)


- He is a brilliant Dutch realist painter and
etcher. He is generally considered one of the
greatest painters and printmaker in European art
and most important in Dutch history. He followed
no particular faith but was interested in spiritual
values and often chooses religious subjects.
-His contribution to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural
achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age when Dutch Golden
painting, although in many ways antimetrical to Baroque style that dominated
Europe.

Summary

The different artists of Renaissance and Baroque Era brought contribution in


the world of art. Without them we cannot see different paintings and sculptures that
are present today. The famous artists during Renaissance period are Michelangelo
Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Leonardo Di Ser Piero Da Vinci, and Raffaello
Sanzio Da Urbino (Raphael). On the other hand, during the Baroque period the well-
known artists are Michelangelo Merisi/ Amerghi Da Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo
Bernini, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn and Diego
Velasquez.
