PRELIMINARY EXAM IN PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

ANSWERS

1. ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
SOURCE
MESSAGE
RECEIVER
CHANNEL
FEEDBACK

2. NOISE (PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT,CLIMATE

3. The communication process is made up of four key components. Those

components include encoding or the sending of message , medium of
transmission OR CHANNEL, decoding or the process in which the receiver
processes the obtained information, and feedback. The communication
process is affected by barriers which include noise form the physical environment
or clinate ... The communication process begins with the sender and ends with
the receiver. The sender is an individual, group, or organization who initiates the
communication.

4. Barriers affect the feedback in the sense that if the receiver clearly
receives or understands the message, effective communication may be
achieved. Thus, barriers hinder effective communication as the message
isn’t clearly received or perceived by the receiver.
5. Body language and facial expressions as non-verbal forms of
communication are powerful communication tools. It aids the
communication process to be effective and efficient especially in
circumstances where verbal or oral language is unnecessary. More so,
non-verbal forms of communication help receiver to better perceive and
understand the message coming from sender especially in cases where
barriers like noise affect the communicative process. On the other hand,
body language and facia expressions aren’t universal for some of these
non-verbal forms of communication are unfamiliar to others from
different countries with different costumeries.
6. The video raised about the complexity of communication in multicultural
setting in a sense that the communicative process is affected by different
factors or variables one of which is the multicultural setting. There are
variables in the communicative process which are not universal and
cannot be interpreted objectively or similarly by people from different
places of the world.
7. We should be very cautious as we communicate in a multicultural setting
because we might be misunderstood or our message might be
misinterpreted due to difference in culture and traditions. In example, in
some parts of the world, kissing someone on the cheek is a polite and
proper gesture during a meeting which may be unacceptable to people
form other countries. Hand shake may be appropriate and proper in some
parts of the world but may not be acceptable to other cultures. Eye
contact which is very common and effective in other countries but may be
offensive to some. In these cases, understanding of the multicultural
setting is indeed very important to achieve effective communication.
8. In my personal point of view, effective communication at home and in
school may be achieved through being responsible and respectful. These
values have been lacking among teenagers today. It may be shallow for
others but will greatly help promote effective communication. In
example, one shall never interrupt whenever somebody speaks. Moreso,
one shall respect other people’s view, opinion and thoughts. Respect and
being responsible are two simple keys to communication and yet take for
granted more often particularly by teenagers today.
