GRADE 8 (QUARTER 1)
MODULE 3.1

ILLUSTRATING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

I. Introduction:

Rational algebraic expressions are fractions that have a polynomial in the

numerator, denominator or both.

In this module you are going to learn how to illustrate rational algebraic
expressions.

II. Objective:

At the end of this lesson, you must be able to illustrate rational algebraic
expressions.

III. Vocabulary List:

Ratio – is a comparison of two or more numbers that indicates how many

times one number contains another.
Polynomial - a mathematical expression of one or more algebraic terms each
of which consists of a constant multiplied by one or more variables
raised to a non-negative integral power
Rational Algebraic Expression - a ratio of two polynomials
Negative Exponent – means how many times to divide by the number.

IV. Pre-Test:

1. Which of the following expressions is a rational algebraic expression?

x 3x −3 x− y
a. b. c. 4 y−2 + x−3 d.
3y ( y + 1) x+ y

2. What is the equivalent mathematical phrase of “the ratio of a number and

four added to a number y”?
y+4 x y x+4
a. b. c. d.
x y+4 x+4 y

3. Which of the following expressions DOES NOT belong to the group?

 3x + y 
a. 
−1
(3x + y )−1 3x + y 3x + y
 b.
x+ y
c.
x+ y
d.
(x + y)−1
 x+ y 

4. What value of the denominator will make the rational algebraic expression
meaningless?
a. 0 b. 1 c. 2 d. 3

5. Which of the following should describe the numerator and denominator of

a rational algebraic expression?
a. function b. equation c. relation d. polynomial

V. Learning Activities:
A rational algebraic expression is a ratio of two
polynomials provided that the denominator is not equal to
zero. In symbols;

LET’S HAVE MORE!!!!

Example 1: Example 2:
2z polynomial 3y2 + z polynomial

Examples 1 and 2 are rational algebraic expression for each shows a ratio
of two polynomials.

x+2 polynomial
Example 3:
y −1 + 3 non-polynomial because the first term is raised to a negative exponent

non-polynomial because the exponent of the expression

(3x − 1)3 x contains a variable
Example 4:
y +2 non-polynomial because the first term which is a variable is inside the
radical sign

2
Example 3 is not a rational algebraic expression since the denominator is not
a polynomial the same with Example 4 because both the numerator and
denominator are non-polynomials.
