6 EASY STEPS TO GET YOUR SON ORGANIZED

ALRIGHT LET'S GET STARTED

I DECIDED TO write about this topic

BECAUSE A COLLEGE COACH TOLD ME,
"THE BIGGEST STRUGGLES STUDENTS
HAVE when they come here is lack of
ORGANIZATION"

This is a short read, for married or single parents that struggle with messy rooms,
book bags, lockers, and missing school assignments.  Many books and videos tell
parents to color code and label everything to get and stay organized.  While this is
true there are other EASY activities that need to take place and still accomplish
the goal of being organized at home, school, and life.

I am a mom of two boys; ages 10 and 16.  They have the same mom and dad,
same upbringings, different personalities, but yet so different, so as parents we
have to make adjustments as to how we parent.

I grew up as an only child without my dad around, so having boys has taught me
that they process & respond differently from females. As an old friend said, “boys
& men respond to pain and consequence."  As this may be true, I have also
incorporated some tactics that have personally worked for me as I have studied
their behavior.
In my profession, I come in contact with many parents; married and single. The
common word that boys use all the time is “I FORGOT."  I call it the F-word around
my house.  Our home isn’t perfect, but we do work on being organized daily.

6 EASY STEPS THAT WORK

"my ultimate goal is to teach my sons

to have a healthy life and healthy
relationships"

My two sons are my world, they make me smile, but sometimes they
REALLY test my parenting skills. When I divorced their dad our lives
changed; so we all had to make many adjustments.  One adjustment
for my sons was having to follow 2 sets of rules at different homes.
This created a mess in my home, literally a mess. They were very
disorganized, but I had to work with them because I realized this was
a drastic emotional moment in our lives. Since then I have come in
contact with many families who have children that are disorganized
and forgetful. I realized this happens in single-family homes, as well
as in two-parent homes.
I started to see a trend, a problem, and a solution.
I was helping other children get organized, but as my son entered
High School I noticed he was very disorganized. I decided to focus on
the solution to the problem.  You will see results as long as you stay
consistent and follow the 6 easy steps.

#1 Empty out the book bag!

My Youngest Son

I have found this parent-friendly activity to be easy and multi-functional.

This activity is a must and will eventually become a habit.  Remember to
stay CONSISTENT.  (This is key to this activity working, and part of the
process to get them organized.)  I have tried it with my 10-year-old and 16-
year-old son. Yes, the 16-year-old rejected the process the first two times,
but after that, he knew it was our routine and he expected it; to the point
that I had to stop asking and he would do it automatically.  On the other
hand, when my youngest son was 9 years old, he didn’t care that his book
bag looked like the above picture. And even had the nerve to show me a
paper with negative remarks from the teacher! Needless to say, we have
overcome the rebellion stage, but we still empty the book bag on the days
they stay with me. It's a struggle sometimes when they come back from their
dad's house, but we get back into the routine quickly.

KEEP IN MIND
This is not the time to scream or punish.
This is a NO-JUDGMENT activity. Tell them in
advance that they will not get in trouble. The
objective is to start a routine, to get organized,
and learn responsibility. Make this a pleasant
experience. If they are home-schooled you can
empty out bags, junk drawers, or the place
where they keep their notebooks and books.

Co-Parenting?- Don't expect the other parent

to do this, just do it on the days your son is
with you. Don't even discuss it unless you have
a healthy relationship with the other parent.

DON'T SCREAM, JUST WATCH

#2 Let's Talk-not scream

Women and moms have a reputation for complaining and

talking too much. I challenge you to STOP the cycle! Let’s
learn to talk to our sons effectively.

Growing up as an only child and without my father.

(that’s another book!) I grew up in an environment of only
women and I absolutely hated it when they spoke to me
with a high-pitched tone. I told myself that I would not
speak in the same manner to my children.
Speak with authority. No need to nag.

We have to focus on RESULTS!

and ask them to repeat back what you just
stated to them.

#3 Don’t scream- Talk, be a role model!

#3 The Mirror

Dialogue is paramount with moms and sons, but sometimes they

don't talk to us for multiple reasons. Here is a solution that will create
a bond and it's fun as well.
I started doing this at the beginning of my separation from their dad.
Upon noticing that sometimes my oldest was sad and would not
express his feelings. I started to write notes on their bathroom mirror.
For example: "I love you, thanks for not talking back today" or "I can't
wait until basketball season starts so we can go to a game."
My oldest son would not respond to the notes, he would just read
them. I would have to ask him if he read my notes, he would say "yes".
On the other hand, my youngest son would always write back on the
mirror. This is a great way to show them, love, without the
embarrassing hugs and kisses most moms do. I have seen moms
write notes in their children's agendas or a note in their lunch box.
They grow to like it and expect it.

6 EASY STEPS TO GET YOUR SON ORGANIZED

KEEP IN MIND
Only write positive notes, don't turn it into a
"TO DO" list. This is a time to feed them
positive words. If you like to draw, draw
something. This can be challenging for some,
but it works. Boys love it!

Co-Parenting?- Offer balance to your son.

Speak positive, and show them, love.

Non-Verbal Communication is
just as STRONG as verbal communication.
Be CONSISTENT.

#4 The 3 Rules for....

As parents, we have to remember that;

#1- Our children are watching us, they do as they see not as they hear.
Keep this in mind as you make decisions in your personal life.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Yes, I’ve screamed at my boys and have used the high pitch voice that I hate,
but then I had to regroup and ask them to come to me as I rephrase my
statement.
#2- Create a SAFE PLACE where you can talk with your som without
punishment, judgment, or consequences. Our SAFE place is in the car, on
our way to school, work, or the supermarket. My teen doesn’t like to express
himself much, but he feels free during our SAFE sessions. My ten-year-old
has SAFE sessions all the time because he speaks without thinking; unlike
my teen son.
#3- Enter their world. I allow my sons to play their music, my only
requirement is for them to play “the clean version”. I sing or try to dance to
their music, and I’ve even learned some of the lyrics. It’s great to come into
our son's world at times. This creates a special connection.

KEEP IN MIND
This is a NO-JUDGMENT activity. Tell them in
advance that they will not get in trouble. The
objective is to build a trusting relationship; so
ensure you follow thru with your words. You
may want to do some talking, but this is your
time to have a listening ear. If they don't want
to engage, then you can initiate the
conversation. Also, remember that if they
want to write a note could also be a great idea.

Co-Parenting?-
Don't expect the other parent to do this, just
do it on the day they are with you.

DON'T SCREAM, JUST LISTEN and

be CONSISTENT.

#5 It Starts In The Bedroom

Many experts recommend people should make their bed daily to have a
productive day. This is very true, but we must lead by example with our
sons. Moms, we should make our bed, to set the expectation with our sons.
Once the bed is made ensure all items have a home and nothing should be
on the floor. A clean room will lead to clean bookbags, lockers, cars, purses,
and other spaces in the house, school, and work. Being organized DOES
start in the bedroom. Try this for one week and notice the difference in your
productivity.

Saying "clean your room" isn't enough. Be specific when giving

instructions. I would clean my son's rooms and explain to them my
definition of "clean" You may also take pictures of the clean room,
print them or text for future reference, of how the room needs to look.

KEEP IN MIND
This is not the time to scream or punish.
Be pleasant and get into a teaching mode.
Make-believe is your first time giving them
instructions, and if possible make-believe they
are not your children (lol). We tend to have
more patience with other people's children
than we do with our own.
Remember, this is a teaching moment.

Co-Parenting?- Encourage your sons to

keep their bedroom at dad's place also
clean and organized.

#6 Daily Accountability
Made Easy

Holding someone accountable for their actions can be difficult. However,

as moms, we can definitely teach our children to be accountable for
themselves. I started this activity with my son because his grades started
to drop, and as he hesitated the first week or two, I had to stay
CONSISTENT and stay the course, because I wanted to ensure I completed
the challenge I had set for myself to help my son to be the best that he can
be.
Step 1- Write down every class subject, then ask:
#1 Do you have any homework?
#2 Do you have a quiz/test coming up
#3 Did you get any graded assignments back today?

Step 2- Have access to their grades, or email their teacher to confirm the
information they are giving you is correct.

This is a DAILY activity for every subject. I have included a template that
can be printed for easier tracking. I recommend getting to store these
documents.

WWW.ACADEMICSWITHAPLUS.COM 24
6 EASY STEPS TO GET YOUR SON ORGANIZED

KEEP IN MIND
This is an activity of "discovery" and trust. It is
micromanaging, but after about 4 weeks of
consistency, you won't have to do this;
because it will be routine. Everyone will start
to see the benefits.
Be patient and listen.

Co-Parenting?- Don't' expect the other

parent to do this at their home. At times I
would call my son on days he stays with his
dad to discuss the items on the list.
I didn't want to ruin the routine.

BE A LISTEN, TAKE NOTES,

and be CONSISTENT.
