IL GIARDINO DELLE VERGINI

La Biennale di Venezia, Piet Oudolf 2010

THE PROJECT

This garden is a part of the architectual biennale of

2010 in Venice. The biennale is curated by Kazuyo
Sejima and is intitled “People meet in architecture”.
The exhibition takes part from the 29th of August until
the 21st of November. The site for the exhibition is IL GIARDINO
an old Italian navy yard. The garden of Piet Oudolf “Il DELLE VERGINI
giardino delle vergini” will be constructed during the
spring and is designed to show its very best during
the exhibition. The plant borders have a pattern of
repeating plant groups in two layers. One layer with
small groups of very textural and outstanding plants,
and one layer with large groups broken up by the
smaller plant groups to create a spontaneous feeling.
Together the two layers works as one image, creating
a feeling of stepping into a tall meadow.

PRESENT SITUATION

TRANSFERRING THE DESIGN ON SITE

This images shows the method used by Piet Oudolf to transfer the drawing on the ground, nec-
essary for setting out the plants. A grid with sections of 2x2 m is put on the planting plan and on
real scale on the site. Then the planting areas are sprayed out on the ground. The image to the
right shows the preparations for the plantings of the High line in New York.

Due to the complexity of the design, various numbers of plant details is done This detail shows
small plant groups, with exact number of plants for each single group. The plants will then be
put out correctly on the sprayed ground. The image to the right shows grid and areas for plant
groups sprayed on the ground.
