ACTIVITY 2: “The Volcano Knowledge Challenge”

Directions: Guess the name of the volcanoes and try to describe them. Three points each. Write your
answer on the space provided.

Volcan Mayon is a stratovolcano in the

province of Albay in the Bicol region that is
active like the others. Volcan Mayon, on the
Philippines' major island of Luzon, erupted
on January 25, 2018, at a level of 4. Mayon
first erupted in 1616, and it has erupted 58
times since then. Vocan Mayon is the
Philippines' most active volcano, with a
height of 2,463 meters. It was categorized
as a national park and renamed mayon
volcano in 2000.

Mount Apo, an active volcano in south
central Mindanao, is located 20 miles (32
kilometers) west of Davao City and is the
Philippines' highest point, rising to 9,692
feet (2,954 metres). It is part of the
Cordillera Central and is surrounded by a
forest of towering, tropical hardwoods, with
two subsidiary summits that are nearly as
tall as it.

Mount Bulusan, often known as Bulusan Volcano, is

the southernmost volcano on the Philippine island of
Luzon. It is located in the Bicol area of the
Philippines, 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of
Mayon Volcano and approximately 600 kilometers
(370 miles) southeast of Manila, the Philippine
capital. It is one of the Philippines' active volcanoes.
Volcanologists classify Bulusan as a stratovolcano
(or composite cone) that sits on the northeast rim of
the Irosin caldera, which originated around 40,000
years ago.

The most active volcano in the central Philippines,

Kanlaon (also spelled Kanlaon), rises to the highest
point on the island of Negros. Many of the fissure-
controlled pyroclastic cones and craters on the huge
2435-meter-high stratovolcano are filled with lakes.
A vast, prolonged northern caldera with a crater lake
and a smaller, but higher, historically active crater to
the south are found on Canlaon's summit. The
Philippines' greatest debris avalanche traveled 33
kilometers.

The Taal caldera is largely filled by Lake
Taal, which has a surface area of 267
square kilometers and is only 3 meters
above sea level. The lake has a maximum
depth of 160 meters with multiple eruptive
foci submerged under it. The 5-km-wide
volcanic island in the northern-central
region of the lake was the source of all
previous eruptions.
