Assignment 5

2017100508
6. Determine the maximum allowable volume flow rate in L/min that can be carried
through a standard steel tube with an OD of 32mm and a 1.5mm wall thickness if the
maximum velocity is to be 3.0 m/s
do = 32 mm
t = 1.5 mm
Vmax = 3 m/s
Solution:
Q = A Vmax A = pi/4 (do^2 – di^2)
Q = 1.4373 x 10^-4 x 3 di = do – 2t
Q = 4.3119 x 10^-4 m^3/s di = 32 – 2(1.5)
Q = 4.3119 x 6 lit/min di = 29
Qmax = 25.87 lit/min A = pi/4 (32^2 – 29^2)
A = 1.4373 x 10^-4 m^2
7. Determine the required size of standard Schedule 40 steel pipe to carry 192 m3 /hr of
water with a maximum velocity of 6 m/s.
Vmax = 6 m/s
Q = 192 m^3/h
Solution:
Q = 192/3600 = 0.0533 m^3/s
A = Q/V = 0.0533/6 = 8.8833 x 10^-3 m^2
Larger area size is 1.291 x 10^-2 m^2, thus the required size for this is 5-in standard
Schedule 40 Steel Pipe
8. A pumped fluid distribution system is being designed to deliver 400 gal/min of water
to a cooling system in a power generation plant. Use the figure below to make an initial
selection of Schedule 40 pipe sizes for the suction and discharge lines for the system.
Also, solve for the actual average velocity of flow for each pipe.
Q = 400 gal/min
Solution:
Suction Pipe, 4-in Schedule 40 Pipe: As = 0.08840 ft^2
Discharge Pipe, 3-in Schedule 40 Pipe: Ad = 0.05132 ft^2
vs = Q/As = (400/0.08840)(1/449) = 10.0777 ft/s
vd = Q/Ad = (400/0.05132)(1/449) = 17.3591 ft/s
