Romans, Reasoned Revelation of Redemption

The Promise Annotated

Romans 1:2
INTRO

The Prologue of Romans (vs. 1-7)

The Penman Announced (vs. 1)

The Promise Annotated (vs. 2)
The Purpose Affirmed (vs. 3,4)
The Plan Advertised (vs. 5,6)
The People Addressed (vs. 7)

Last time, we saw…

The Penman Announced (vs. 1)
  A Serving One
  A Sent One
  A Separated One

Today…
The Promise Annotated (vs. 2)
“annotated” = with a note added
Verse 2 is in parenthesis which means the author (the Holy Spirit), and the
penman (Paul) intended it as an additional note in the sentence.
It does NOT mean that vs. 2 is not important!
Every Word of God is important!
Actually, the parenthesis can show that while the thought is not part of main
idea of the sentence, it is SO important that it cannot wait…
It must be placed here… stuck in here, so to speak, because the reader
NEEDS to know this RIGHT NOW.

Grammatically, it is an adjective clause describing the “gospel of God” in vs.

I. Good News Promised

“which he had promised afore”
A. Its Definition
“gospel” means “good news”
When we talk about “proclaiming the Gospel,” we are talking about
proclaiming THE good news.
Not just any good news, but THE good news.

1
The best news that ever can be proclaimed…
Though we are sinners deserving of God’s wrath,
He has provided a way of salvation from sin and from hell
through Himself, God the Son, Jesus Christ,
taking on human flesh to die in our place,
and shed His blood to wash away our sin.
And this salvation is freely provided to anyone who will transfer their trust
off of themselves and on to the Lord Jesus Christ,
receiving Him as their Savior and being born into the family of God.

[SALV] – The Romans Road

This is the definition of the Good News Promised. Next see…

B. Its Determination
Because God is all-knowing and knows the end from the beginning,
this Gospel (good news of salvation) was always in His plan!
“before the world began”
II Tim. 1:9,10
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our
works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us
in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light
through the gospel:

Why?
Because He loves us!
John 3:16
Romans 5:8
II Cor. 5:14,15

II. Good News Prophesied
“by his prophets”

seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his
heel.

Egypt.

Lev. 17:11 – shed blood

11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you
upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the
blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

Numbers 21:9 - serpent lifted up, look and live

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it
came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld
the serpent of brass, he lived.
John 3:14,15
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must
the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal
life.

When Romans 1:2 says the Gospel was promised afore by his prophets in the
holy scriptures, it is referring to the Gospel intimated throughout the Old
Testament.

II. Good News Prophesied
III. Good News Penned
“in the holy scriptures”

“holy scriptures” means “set-apart writings”

What sets them apart?

A. Inspiration
No other writings are “God-breathed”!
II Tim. 3:16,17
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good
works.

II Peter 1:20,21
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private
interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of
God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

I Cor. 2:13
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom
teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things
with spiritual.

B. Preservation
1. Plenary
II Tim. 3:16 – “All”
Not just the parts that speak to your heart.
The Bible does not “become the Word of God” (as it speaks to you),
it IS the Word of God!
The Bible does not “contain the Word of God”; it IS the Word of God.
2. Verbal
(again) I Cor. 2:13
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom
teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual
things with spiritual.

Psalm 12:6,7
6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of
earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this
generation for ever.

Matthew 4:4

4
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

One of the reasons that for our Bible we use the King James is just this:
that every word is preserved for every generation.
The new versions are translated from texts that were not available to
every generation,
not passed down and received by God’s people through every
century.
And they have lots of words missing! Lot’s of God’s Words!
All of which are essential according to Matt. 4:4.

Further explanation is in the pamphlet on our table, “Why We Use the

King James.”
Some folks are for the King James but for the wrong reasons.
“It was good enough for the Apostle Paul, so it’s good enough for me.”
No! We have Biblical and reasonable explanations why it is important
to use the English translation called the King James.

I’m glad to discuss this with anyone.

What sets the Scriptures apart?

A. Inspiration
B. Preservation
C. Application
Psalm 119:128
128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I
hate every false way.
II Peter 1:3
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto
life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to
glory and virtue:

The Bible is everything we need!

It is true and applicable for “all matters of faith AND practice.”
Faith – what we must believe
Practice – what we must do

For every and any situation you face, there is an answer in the Bible!
Sometimes we don’t know the Bible well enough.
Sometimes we haven’t searched the Bible long enough.
BUT the answer is there!

Many areas of life are addressed specifically in black and white.

All other areas are addressed in principle.
Ex. – guidelines for Internet use
the word “internet” is not in the Bible…

5
but Psalm 101:3 is…
3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of
them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

What sets the Scriptures apart?

A. Inspiration
B. Preservation
C. Application
D. Motivation
All we need!

Jer. 15:16 – food / joy

16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me
the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O
LORD God of hosts.
One of the most powerful physical motivators is food.
One of the most powerful emotional or spiritual motivators is joy.

Psalm 119:105 – guidance

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

You may read some other motivational books,

but nothing compares to the Word of God, the Bible!

CONCLUSION
