‘I Scream for Ice Cream’ Date:12-06-2021
Objectives:
Procedure
1. Mix and pour all of the ingredients (except ice) into the resealable plastic bag.
2. Remove any air pockets inside the bag and seal the plastic bag properly.
3. Put a layer of ice on top of an old newspaper/magazine.
4. Pour rock salt on top of the ice until it covers the surface.
5. Place the plastic bag with the ice cream mixture on top of the ice and salt layer.
6. Cover with old newspaper until the plastic bag is completely covered.
7. Fold the ends of the newspaper/magazine to prevent any leaks.
8. Start shaking the newspaper/magazine pack. Continue shaking it for 15 minutes.
9. Should a leak appear, drain the water and cover the leak with more newspaper.
10. After shaking, carefully unpack the newspaper. Wipe the surface of the plastic to remove any traces of
salt.
11. Open the bag and enjoy!
Guide Questions:
1. Based on the ice cream you made in the activity ‘I scream for Ice Cream!’, what was the consistency
of the mixture before the experiment? What about after?
At the beginning of the experiment, the mixture was watery and more of liquid than solid. After the
experiment, the mixture was more solid and had thicker consistency.
2. In the activity, you used newspaper/magazine to cover the plastic bag. Briefly explain the purpose of
the newspaper/magazine.
The purpose of the newspaper/magazine was to secure the mixture and help it in the process of
achieving a thicker consistency.
3. What is the behavior of particulate nature of matter in the activity “I Scream for Ice Cream”?
The particles in the liquid form at the beginning of the activity stopped moving about and settled into a
stable arrangement, forming the solid form.
- Phase transition occurs given the right temperature and movement of the particles. Everyday, matter mat
change into solid, liquid, or gas, depending on the circumstances or occurrences.
