HOSPITAL DESIGN - SITE DESIGN SCRIPT

1. Good evening. We, the students of KSOA, Mokshitha, Neena and Sheryl are here to present our
hospital site study.
2. Our site is located at the proposed construction area for the AIIMS hospital in Thoppur, Madurai.
3. The District is situated in the South of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded on the North by the
districts of Dindigul, Thiruchirapalli and on the East by Sivagangai and on the West by Theni and
South by Virudhunagar.
4. AND 5. Madurai owes its popularity to an assemblage of ancient temples and shrines.
The city has a number of historical monuments, with the Meenakshi Amman Temple and
Thirumalai Nayakar Palace being the most prominent.

6. The temple city is also called by different names like “City of Jasmine '', and “City that never
sleeps”. It is famous for Jasmine Flowers and also known for special sungudi cotton.

7. Topography of Madurai - The total geographical area of the district is 3.74 lakh hectares.
Latitude: 9. 5 ° N, longitude : 78.1 ° E

8. AND 9. There are 13 blocks in the district of Madurai. And our site is located at the thiruparankundram
block.

10. Thiruparankundram, is a town in Madurai district in Tamil Nadu. It is about 10 kilometres from
Madurai and constitutes the southwest part of the city. The town's landmark and fame is the huge
monolithic rock hill. It is home to many ancient and historic monuments.

11. Population of Thiruparankundram is 169300.

12. Thiruparankundram contributes a lot to the agriculture in Tamilnadu and it is a huge supplier of
madurai’s famous jasmine flowers.

13 and 14. Thoppur is a village located in the Thiruparankundram Block of Madurai. Positioned in
the rural region, it is one of the 50 villages of the block. The village has around 878 families.
According to Census 2011, Thoppur's population is 3139.

15. The Centre has selected Konna Pudupatti village, Thoppur in Madurai as an ideal location for
establishing the new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu and the Rs
1,100-crore project will envisage the setting up of an integrated state-of-the-art institution in the
available 200 acres land.

16. Located in the site proposed for AIIMS Madurai, our site has an area of 4 acres. It is situated in
the south western region of the 200 acre region.

17. To make transportation easier, the site connects to an 8m national highway and a 4m side road.
The site has an area of 16180 sq m.

18. The shape of the site is trapezoidal. The side facing the highway has the largest dimension - 184 m.

21, 22 and 23. The surrounding context: in the north eastern part of the site, is the PTR engineering
college. The neighborhood is a developing area. In the western side of the aiims site, there is the
VIP city - aiims township which is under construction. The area spread behind the whole site is for
the thoppur housing board. Near the site there is the austinpatti police station and a pillayar temple.

24. There are 4 local bus stands in the neighborhood. The collector office bus stop is the nearest to
the site.

26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 . Weather / rainfall / wind

In Thoppur, the wet season is oppressive and overcast, the dry season is muggy and partly cloudy,
and it is hot year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 70°F to
98°F and is rarely below 66°F or above 103°F.
Based on the beach/pool score, the best time of year to visit Madurai for hot-weather activities is
from mid December to mid March.
Thoppur is hot and dry for eight months of the year. The hottest months are from March to July. The
district experiences a moderate climate from August to October, and a cool climate from November
to February. Fog and dew are rare, occurring only during the winter season.
Rainfall is irregular and intermittent, with an average of 85 cm per annum.
The wind blows from Northeast direction during January – February, and from Southwest direction
during May to July.

31. This is the sun path recorded approximately at 1 pm.

32. Most of the area of madurai contains red loam, black soil and clay loam. And thoppr’s soil type is
red loam.Which means crops like paddy, pulses, jowar, linseed, millet, potatoes, sugarcane, and
fruits can be grown.
