Data Revolution

•  Explosion of the capability of

acquiring data on a vast scope of
the human experience
•  This extension of measurement
ability and data collection opens
immense opportunities
•  In this precise moment a new
product or service gets to the
market as a development based on
Data Science

According to the study "Worldwide Big Data Technology and Services, 2012–2015 Forecast“
conducted by IDC (www.idc.com) for the European Commission, data-driven technologies and
services are expected to grow worldwide at a compound annual growth rate of 40% – about
seven times that of the ICT market overall

Job Profiles

•  Data Engineer: masters very large databases and

distributed information systems, is responsible of
IT Security, and applies data analytics for
structuring data

•  Data Analyst: filters and extracts information from

large scope of data towards informed stratigical
decisions; data analyst handles responsibly
sensitive data

“Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century ...Data scientists are the key to realizing the
opportunities presented by big data. They bring structure to it, find compelling patterns in it, and
advise executives on the implications for products, processes, and decisions. They find the story
buried in the data and communicate it. And they don’t just deliver reports: They get at the
questions at the heart of problems and devise creative approaches to them....”
Harvard Business Review, October 2012

TUM Integrative Study Program

TUM has moved in the forefront and is planning one of the first
Integrative Study Program in Data Science in Germany and Europe.

The Program is in development and promises to be:

-  Integrative: it takes advantage of and integrates all the strong

competences at TUM in Data Science;

-  International: besides the European partnerships (EuroTech), it draws

much information and know-how from similar experiences already
starting in the USA;

-  Dialoguing with companies: professional stages or case study

laboratories on real-life problems on large data sets offered by
European companies to nurture the creativity and the self-confidence in
proposing solutions.

Why should Mathematics students enrol?
Some of the most influential papers of the past 10-15 years in applied mathematics
address problems in dimensionality reduction of high dimensional data sets and machine
learning methods.

The most cited paper in nonlinear PDE of Pierre Louis Lions (Fields medalist) dated 1992 is

MG Crandall, H Ishii, PL Lions, User's guide to viscosity solutions of second order partial differential
equations, Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 1992

with ca 4000 citations, while the recent paper of Emmanuel Candès, Terence Tao (Fields
medalist), and Justin Romberg dated to 2006

EJ Candès, J Romberg, T Tao, Robust uncertainty principles: Exact signal reconstruction from highly
incomplete frequency information, IEEE Trans. Information Theory, 2006

has by now more than 9000 citations.

Cool Maths without fear for missing cool jobs!
•  You will learn latest developments in mathematical representation of high-
dimensional data and mathematical machine learning (advanced tools of
probability, mathematical statistics, optimization, differential geometry, harmonic
analysis, cryptography)
•  You have the opportunity to learn technical aspects by attending freely the
courses offered by the twin Master in Data Engineering and Analytics at
Computer Science and the complementary courses from EI and other Faculties
•  You have the opportunity of receiving basic education in legal, social, political
aspects of technology in society, with particular emphasis on Data Science
•  You will have the opportunity of having international exchange experiences
with our European partner Universities (e.g., EuroTech Alliance) and to
conclude double degrees (Ecole Polytechnique – France, KTH - Sweden)
•  You can participate at the TUM Data Innovation Lab (TUM-DI-LAB), a summer

Internship or
summer stage at
TUM-DI-LAB 10

The Department of Mathematics requires Master students to attend Internships

at local companies of gaining some practical/professional experience before
concluding the University studies.
As an alternative we are currently trying to
establish the TUM Data Innovation Lab
(TUM-DI-LAB): a summer research
experience that welcomes Master students
interested in exploring new data-driven
approaches to interdisciplinary challenges.
Students join small teams, working alongside
in a communal environment. They learn how
to marshal, analyze, and visualize data,
while gaining broad exposure to the modern
world of data science.

The project proposal to acquire resources to establish the TUM-DI-LAB has been submitted on
April 28, 2016 and is under evaluation.

Higher EuroTech Academy of Data Science (HEADS)
EuroTech is an alliance of four major European technical universities committed to finding
solutions for the grand challenges of society.

The objective of HEADS is the establishment in 36 months within

the EuroTech Alliance (DTU, EPFL, TU/e, TUM) of consolidated
and exportable Univ. curricula/syllabi for the most effective and
durable education of a new class of European specialists in Data
Engineering and Data Analysis. They will serve the huge and
urgent request of existing European companies to enter the field
of Data Science, but also to form new entrepreneurs with
continental vision.
The project proposal to establish the HEADS Strategic Partnership has been submitted on
March 30, 2016 and is under evaluation. Expected evaluation result due at the end June 2016.
