INTRODUCTION

1. Local area network

A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that
interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence,
school, laboratory, university campus or office building.[1] By
contrast, a wide area network (WAN) not only covers a larger
geographic distance, but also generally involves leased
telecommunication circuits.

Types of LAN network

1. Ethernet
2. Token ring
3. Fibet Distibutes Data interface
(1). Ethernet
a system for connecting a number of computer systems to form
a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of
information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or
more systems.

Advantages of Ethernet
• Speed. Speed offered by an ethernet connection is much more
greater compared to a wireless connection. ...
• Security. Unlike Wifi where it is prone to attacks, an ethernet
connection has higher levels of security. ...
• Reliability. Ethernet connections posses supreme reliability. ...
• Efficiency.

Disadvantages of Ethernet
• Mobility. In terms of mobility, there are more physical
limitations in ethernet. ...
• Expandability. In case if you want to expand your network, then
there will be additional expenses and it will be time consuming
in ethernet. ...
• Installation. ...
How to connect an Ethernet cable?
1. Plug an Ethernet cable into your computer.
2. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into one of your
hub's Ethernet ports.
3. You should now have established an Ethernet connection,
and your computer is now ready to start surfing the internet.

(2).Token ring
a local area network in which a node can only transmit when in
possession of a sequence of bits (the token), which is passed to
each node in turn.

Application of Token ring

Token Ring is a computer networking technology used to build
local area networks. It was introduced by IBM in 1984, and
standardized in 1989 as IEEE 802.5. It uses a special three-byte
frame called a token that is passed around a logical ring of
workstations or servers.
Advantage of token ring
• Token Ring technology uses ring topology for data transfers and
provides more advanced congestion management than that
available in Ethernet.
• One of the major advantages of the Token Ring (TR) is no
collision in the network and, therefore, utilization can reach
100% under heavy load.

How to work in token ring

A token ring network is a local area network (LAN) in which all
computers are connected in a ringor star topology and pass one
or more tokens from host to host. Only a host that holds a token
can send data, and tokens are released when receipt of the data
is confirmed.

(3).Fibet Distibutes Data interface

Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is a set of ANSI and ISO
standards for transmission of data in local area network (LAN)
over fiber optic cables. It is applicable in large LANs that can
extend up to 200 kilometers in diameter.
characteristics of Fibet Distibutes Data interface
• 100 Mbit/s
• token passing,
• dual counter rotating ring network
• the fault tolerant features.
• The main limitation of the FDDI is the limited 100 Mbps
bandwidth and the packet delay.
Advantages of FDDI
• It offers higher bandwidth (upto 250 Gbps).
• Hence it can handle data rates upto 100 Mbps.
• It offers high security as it is difficult to eavesdrop on fiber optic
link.
• Fiber optic cable does not break as easily as other types of
cables.
disadvantages of FDDI
• FDDI is complex.
• Hence installation and maintenance require great deal of
expertize.
• FDDI is costly.
• This is because fiber optic cable, adapters and concentrators are
very expensive.

Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)

• FDDI uses optical fiber as its physical medium.
• It operates in the physical and medium access control (MAC
layer) of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network
model.
• It provides high data rate of 100 Mbps and can support
thousands of users.

Features of LAN
• Every computer has the potential to communicate with any
other computers of the network.
• High degree of interconnection between computers.
• Easy physical connection of computers in a network.
• Inexpensive medium of data transmission.
• High data transmission rate.
Conclusion

LANs (Local Area Network) use Ethernet as the primary technology for
wired connectivity. Some of the network devices we use on our LAN
are switches, access points, and routers. Ethernet is the dominant
standard that is used on our LAN, wireless devices use another
standard.
