INTRODUCTION

This study is to measure the level of attitude of Grade 12

students while doing their research. Action research can be

defined as “an approach in which the action researcher and

a client collaborate in the diagnosis of the problem and in

the development of a solution based on the diagnosis”

(Bryman and Bell, 2011)

According to Michael Linsin (2017), students can handle

their bad attitudes by means of keeping the attitude inside

of them and they have to focus on what they are doing and

always think of the purpose what they have to do it. The

only that can help students to conquer that attitude is only

them and no one else. Some of the solutions to bad attitudes

are the advices of the parents and of course help themselves

to adapt those advices and to apply it to themselves.

In this research, the researchers should know the

different attitude of students, including their gender, age,

year level and their strand/track. This research will

conducted in Wesleyan Univesity Philippines and it will

finish on january 2022.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Different attitude of students in research

According to Amin (2017), the study revealed that

students have favorable attitude towards research and

significant difference on the attitude occurred among

internet and non – internet users. On the other hand, Wang

and Guo (2011) made a study on the influence of required

research component such as thesis or research project on

student’s attitude towards research methods classes and

their research posited that students can encounter major

obstacles while studying in research method classes and

applying learned knowledge.

Nowadays, research has turned into one of the most

significant rational assets for all human being to transform

his way of life. Man’s huge rise depends upon research which

made an important function in itself. In the Philippines,

the demands for research in education was addressed through

immersing pioneers of senior high school programs since

school year 2016 until now. (Hussain et.al, 2016)

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

According to Davari et al. (2015),in their research

entitled; “ The evaluation of relationship Between Self –

efficiency in research and Research performance of Dental

student of Yata Dental College in 2014 “ concluded that the

overall mean of self – efficiency in research was 159.79

±27.69 and the mean of research of performance was

11.02±16.37. The results showed that there was a significant

and positive relationship between the overall scale of self–

efficiency and research (p–value= 0.004,r=03). Based on the

age, there was no significant difference in the mean score

of self–efficiency in research in all aspects but in the

areas of skills and expertise (p 0.05). There was a

significant difference in the mean score of research

performance in terms of the age (p–value= 0.023).There was

no statistical significant between the overall mean score

and the score of seven parts of self – efficiency in

research and research performance in the terms of sex (p

0.05). Regarding the association of self – efficiency in

research with research performance of dental students, it

can be stated that awareness of the level of self –

efficiency in research can lead to better planning for

improving the research performance.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

Shankat et al. (2014), found out that students have

positive attitudes towards research. Similarly, significant

results were found on age different programs of study and

university types. Similar work has been conducted by Shu-

Ching Wang and Yuh-Jen Guo (2011) as they sought to

investigate the influence of a required research component

such as a thesis or research project on students’ attitude

towards research methods classes and research. They

concluded that students can encounter major obstacles while

studying in research methods classes and applying learned

knowledge. Moreover, Wang and Guo observed that students

experienced immediate and long term effects from any adverse

influences they meet in research methods classes and exhibit

a reduced level of motivation to actively participate in

research methods classes and activities. Students at the

undergraduate level usually tend to view research methods

courses negatively. However, an understanding of these

attitudes is necessary to help instructors facilitate the

learning of research principles for their students by

enabling them to create more positive attitudes toward such

courses (Papanastasiou, 2002, p.16).

Students’ attitude directly influences how they

mentally approach research including all the work related to

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

research. Positivism enables students to solve problems

quickly in which negative attitude hampers the efforts in

research. (Miandashti and Rezaei, 2013)

According to Mezzel and Zemliansky (2012), on

“Student’s Pre-existing attitude towards research writing “,

students enter college carrying with them baggage of

negative attitudes on research writing. Students tend to

equate research work with looking for and reporting

information and not with development and summarizing of new

knowledge. Second, when completing assignment in a research

course many students display more involvement and eagerness

in primary research while continuing to show negative

attitudes towards secondary research.

According to Seinens et al. (2010), conducted a study

on the medical students to explore their attitudes towards

the research and found that through the majority of the

students felt that research would be beneficial in their

career, fewer than half of the students were significantly

involved in any research activity during their medical

school. Students who realize the need of Spending more time

in research activities are even fewer: about one fourth of

the students reported no interests in any such activity.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Factors that affect the student’s attitude

According to Mohammadi et al.(2016), the proposal

writing workshops, introduction to the English and Persian

resources practical application of scientific methods, as

well as attending the lesson research methodology workshop,

and coordinating education and research affairs, can help

students actively participate in research activities.

According to Siddiqui and Ashmad (2015), conducted

study on the research attitude of social science research

scholars in relation to their motivation and self-concept.

It revealed that achievement, motivation and self-concept

played an important role in affecting the research attitude

of scholars.

Moreover Fishbein and Ajzen (2013), describe that

attitude is a learned predisposition to respond in a

consistently favorable or unfavorable manner with respect to

a given object. This proposes that condition existing within

the teaching and learning situation or environment will have

direct influence on the formulation of learners’ attitude

both in cognitive and affective aspects. Furthermore,

Belgrave and Jules (2013), enumerated the types of attitudes

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

which learners possess and among them is their attitude

towards research and about research learning in general.

According Zamani-Miandashti et al. (2013), revealed

that there is an existed relationship between effort

regulation and university students self-efficacy for

performance and learning. The results showed that when

students have a higher self-efficacy, they are more likely

to put more efforts into their academic studies.

SYNTHESIS OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Amin (2017) that students have favorable

attitude towards research and significant difference on the

attitude occurred among internet and non – internet users.

On the other hand, Wang and Guo (2011) said that students

can encounter major obstacles while studying in research

method classes and applying learned knowledge. Shu-Ching

Wang and Yuh-Jen Guo (2011) concluded that students can

encounter major obstacles while studying in research methods

classes and applying learned knowledge.

Moreover Hussain et.al, (2016), said that research has

turned into one of the most significant rational assets for

all human being to transform his way of life. Man’s huge

rise depends upon research which made an important function

in itself.

From the literature gathered, it really implies that

attitude towards research greatly affects on how people deal

with research. Whether a person undergone a good or bad

experience with research, it indicates when he or she will

still engage in research and his or her attitude towards it

will neither be optimistic or pessimistic. The ideas

discussed can help the researcher in suggesting ways of

overcoming negative attitudes towards research. It could

also be possible that the result of this study be a great

help to research teachers, especially in senior high school

to consider their students attitude towards research and be

able to address them properly. Likewise, the researcher is

looking forward for a better and positive result of the

study.

METHOD

Descriptive design/ research

Descriptive research design is a scientific method

which involves observing and describing the behavior of a

subject without influencing it in any way. (Martyn

Shuttleworth,2019)

Quantitative research design is the standard

experimental method of most scientific disciplines. (Martyn

Shuttleworth,2019)

Research and Instrument

A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of

a series of questions for the purpose of gathering

information from respondents. (Saul McLeod,2018)

Questionnaires provide a relative cheap, quick, and

efficient way of obtaining large amounts of information from

a large sample of people. (Saul McLeod,2018)

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

The researcher used questionnaire to gathered data to

support their study. This is useful for large populations

when interviews would be impractical.

Research Site

Wesleyan University Philippines is important because

this is where the students conduct their research and learn

different studies. School not only helps the students learn

necessary concepts and skills, but it also allows students

to interact with other students socially, academically, and

emotionally.

Mabini Extension is a barangay in the city of

Cabanatuan, in the province of Nueva Ecija. Its population

as determined by the 2020 Census was 3,208. This represented

0.98% of the total population of Cabanatuan.

Data Collection

This study conduct a certain survey form for the

students think will serve as a primary source of data

collection, the survey form will be distributed to the 100

respondents which are the students of Grade 12 senior high

school.
WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

Data Analysis

Likert scale usually have five potential choices

(strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly

disagree) but sometimes go up to ten or more. The final

average score represents overall level of accomplishment or

attitude toward the subject matter.

A method of ascribing quantitative value to

quantitative data to make it amenable to statistical

analysis. A numerical value is assigned to each potential

choice and a mean figure for all the responses is computed

at the end of the evolution or survey.

data if you have a list of numbers that represents the

frequency of a certain outcome in sample.

Mean implies average and it is the sum of a set of data

divided by the numbers of data. Mean can prove to be an

effective tool when comparing different sets of data.

Validity and Reliability of Instrument

This study is conducted with questionnaire that will be

given ‘to the selected students of senior high school Grade

12 who are involve in the research, questionnaire contains

question that is related to the research topic that will be

needed for the collection of data.

The questionnaire contains some questions that will

serve as a guide for the researcher, this questions are the

different types of attitudes of students, and the profile of

respondents or the socio demographic profile which are the

age, gender , year level, and the track/ strand of a

respondents.

AGE

Age of senior high school respondents. It is shown in

table 2 that those respondents with age 17-18 years old has

the highest number of contribution which is 86 or 86.00%,

age 19-20 years has the number distribution which is 12 or

12.00% and respondents with age of 21 and above has the

lowest number of distribution which is 2 or 2.00%.

According to records, respondents who belong to the age

of 17-18, 19-20 and 21 or above are those respondents who

are students who are doing research as a relevant activity

to learn at school, and they find themselves reasonably

capable to complete such tasks.

Furthermore, The Department of Education (2016) stated

that age was the single largest predictor. Age of the

respondents is one of the most important characteristics in

understanding their views about the particular problems; by

the large age indicates level of maturity of individuals in

that sense age becomes more important to examine the

response. For teachers, age- do matter when it comes to

choosing either a deep or a surface learning approach.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

GENDER

Gender of the senior high school respondents. The table

shows that most of the respondents are female students with

51 or 51.00% while male respondents has 49 or 40.00% of the

total population.

Based on the data gathered, it is observed that the

senior high school of Wesleyan University Philippines for

school year 2021-2022 were mostly female.

According to Baird (2016), it considers that age,

gender, study modalities, the type of qualifications

allowing admission to the programme, and the campus could

have an influence on fear of research courses as well as on

research orientation.

YEAR LEVEL

Year level of senior high school respondents. The table

shows that all of the respondents are grade 12 with

respondents of 100 or 100.00%.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Based on the data gathered, the 100 respondents of

senior high school students in Grade 12 answered the

questionnaires we gave them to see the results of different

attitude of students in doing research.

According to K-12 Philippines, 2015 Senior High School

(SHS) covers the last two years of the K-12 program and

includes Grade 11 and 12. In SHS, students will go through a

core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice.

TRACK/STRAND

Track/Strand of senior high school respondents. The

table show that most of the respondent are STEM with

respondents of 71 or 71.00%, while HUMMS respondents has 29

or 29.00% of the total population.

The data implies that there are positive and negative

attitude of students in doing research specially those

students in STEM .

The choice of career track will define the content of

the subject will take in Grade 12. Senior High School

subjects fall either the Core Curriculum of specific Tracks

(official Gazette, 2012).

interpreted as “agree”. Next is item number 7 “Research is

stressful” got 3.3 weighted mean, interpreted as “agree”.

Table 3 also shows the attitudes of students in doing

research. In this category, the overall impact of this part

shows that they are “Strongly agree” on the items about

their positive and negative attitude in doing a research, an

overall weighted mean of 3.26.

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

There are different kinds of attitude that students

show in doing research. In doing research, the students may

encounter some problems or obstacle that may challenge them

while doing their studies. One of the major problem is the

lacking of equipment like laptop or internet, which makes

the students become lazy in doing their research on time,

and may lead to a negative attitude.

One of the respondents said that,

“one of the major problem that

students encounter while doing
research is that they don’t have
Laptop so they can’t pass their
research on time because they
will wait to their classmate
finished their study so they can
borrow their laptop, so in the
end they are late passing their
papers”.
However, research plays an important role in student’s

life, they will become more responsible and they will able

know how to handle their attitude in doing a research.

Students will realize that their study will help them in

the future.

One of the respondents said that,

“Students know that this

research is important and they
learn and discover something
that they don’t know and they

are more responsible now

especially in time management,
they always pass papers on
time”.

Wang and Guo (2011) made a study on the influence of

required research component such as thesis or research

project on student’s attitude towards research methods

classes and their research posited that students can

encounter major obstacles while studying in research method

classes and applying learned knowledge.

According to Davari et al. (2015), stated that

awareness of the level of self – efficiency in research can

lead to better planning for improving the research

performance.

According to Seinens et al. (2010), conducted a study

on the medical students to explore their attitudes towards

the research and found that through the majority of the

students felt that research would be beneficial in their

career.

1. The socio-demographic profile of the respondents show

that most of the respondents in senior high school has

the highest number of female, age 17-18 years old,

grade 12 students and in General Academic Strand, they

possess significantly more positive and they are

motivated in doing their research.

2. The positive and negative attitude of a student’s in

doing their research have a great impact on their

study. On the positive, students are motivated in doing

a research because they know that it will help them in

the future and it has an important role in student’s

life. On the negative attitude of students in doing

research, the researcher found out that being stress

can lead to a negative attitude of a student, they

cannot focus on their study so in the end, they will

not do their research and they will not pass it on

time.

3. The researcher came up to an idea of having symposium

about boosting positive attitude of students in doing a

research. Consider trying some these self-acceptance

activities to make student aware of his/her strengths

and weaknesses. In turn, the student can begin thinking

positively, developing self-esteem and celebrating

WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PHILIPPINES

Recommendations

1. Students should be aware to their attitudes so that it

will be easy to them to handle it and do research

seriously, because their study will help them a lot in

the future.

2. Parents should understand and motivate their children

in doing research and help them to be more responsible.

3. Teacher should have a long patience to their students,

make sure that they discussed clearly, what they are

going to do and motivate their students to study hard

and finish their work on time.

4. Future researchers encourage studying hard and using

this research as a guide to their study, it will help

them to improve their attitude and for them to be able

to avoid the factors that can affect their attitudes in

doing research.
