Tamil for Beginners Kausalya Hart Gas Sora guimseant Osnpaentiss) THABI) GVH Shor siyguo—gy Gisasgveit Merten sofluny§) Oamasegret Cm2amugi sarcen flongs sill. : — Goring women There are two things born from mountains, shining so brilliantly that that the great bow down, driving darkness from earth circled by roaring waters. One is the flaming sun, single wheel bright as lightning, the other is Tamil that has no like. —from the Tantiyalankaram. Preface Tamil is spoken by about seventy million people, the majority of whom live in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Its speakers also comprise important political and cultural blocks in Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. Tamil has been cultivated for over two thousand years, with the result that it is one of the world’s great carriers of culture. It is one of the two classical languages of India, and its ancient literature is in no way smaller or less distinguished than that of Sanskrit, its northern counterpart. Indeed, the richness of Tamil and its culture is so extensive that few Tamils themselves begin to have an idea of it. Tamil literature that is available to us starts from Ist century A.D. We have classical anthologies (Sangam Literature) from the Ist to 3rd century A.D., moral literature influenced by Buddhism and Jainism, from 4th century to 6th century. The immortal Valluvar wrote his Tirukkural at this time. The great Alvars (Vaishnavites) and Nayanmars (Saivaites) sang Bhakti literature from the 7th century to 1 1th century. Tamil has five major Epics: Cilappatikaram, Manimékalai, Civakavintamani, Valaiyapati and Kuntalakéci (the last two are not available completely). Kampan’s great epic the Tamil Ramdayanam was written in the 12th century. There are vast amounts of Saiva Siddhanta, Sri Vaishnava literature and philosophy, and Siddha literature from the 12th to 15th century. From the 12th to the 19th century many pirapantams (comprising 96 kinds of themes) were written. Western missionaries came to Tamil Nadu in the 16th century and made their own contribution to Tamil Literature. Tamil prose (not counting the commentatorial literature, which was much earlier) began to flourish in the 19th century. Modern Tamil has a vast amount of modem literature: stories, novels, dramas, biographies, literary criticism and essays, poetry, movie scripts, musical scores, and many other kinds of writing. Many newspapers and magazines are published. Contemporary literature in Tamil includes much excellent scholarship on such subjects as Tamil literature and history, Indian music, Sanskrit (virtually all important Sanskrit works have been translated into Tamil), Indian history and Indian culture. Apart from all these things, Tamil also has an enormous and living oral literature, which is slowly (but incompletely) being mined by scholars. Tamil also contains tens of thousands of inscriptions dating from the 6th century A.D. which are one of the main sources for Tamil and Indian history. The first part of this book consists of 45 graded lessons. Its purpose is to introduce students to modern written and spoken Tamil. The first 11 lessons are in the form of simple conversations in order to introduce students slowly to the basic structures of the Tamil language and some facets of Tamil culture. The lessons cover typical situations the students are likely to encounter tl Introduction wi woe u9199 u9dig ws u903g us hig wimg Us ung USGI, wS9 9 100919) us ue, u920 9H wee uw us89 uGg uu93) uéig ures uesg) ug umg uorg ung usigy uE@3) ung ug usg uragy weg 189 ug uus@ usig uree use ug um ugg ung ug Sep use ue use us9 ura Leap 19 G2 93) ros 3 9 mp a9 np a9 9 73 29 29 m9 29 20 Ge we re we te, me me ne ge go 290 79 Se 20 FQ 20 6nOSo88an3 70879088 OrsaoMaarSroatTsOad al eae Oy Baran doe @aeas [a GQ CECVrFaasaacIIsE a ue uG uus ui ure ues uo um uo un us ue i) ua u@ uz urs us 8ee Oi bwaargaoe®@I ae as g 825 Os Baas ace datas Lax} Lesson une 1 silypesia seid: amen, giat Gonamai.
