What is It

Art evolved in earth as human beings do. In fact, many studies proved
that several cave-men inscribed an art in their place where they lived. Also,
our ancestors used art to show their lifestyle through the so called body art.
Until now, art is observable anywhere around the world. It can be found in
television, internet, or even in the newspaper. Miriam Webster’s Dictionary
defined art as the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in
the production of visual objects. However, various visual art designers today
use more artistic, humorous and funny style of art known as comic art.

Comic art is a type of art that entice person to read, and it entertains
especially the children. Comic art uses talk balloon. This talk balloon is in oval-
shaped, cloud-shaped or round bubble with a tail which floats above the
creature who was said to be talking. In other words, it holds a dialogue or a
character’s idea. Comic artist should not only know how to illustrate but also
how to be a great story-teller. There are basic elements we can apply in a
comic art or comical sketch painting or drawing. These elements are being
used to make the comic art more attractive, interesting and colorful.

Basic Elements Applied in Comic Art:

1. Line is considered as a point moves through the existing space. It is generally

observable in its environment as it distinguished in form. Technically, it is the
important factor that gives direction of a spot in specific place.

2
2. Shape is an enclosed figure with two-dimensional space. It adds a funny
value to the characters. In fact, comic artists frequently used geometric figures
to emphasize the action or figure of the characters.

3. Color is definitely applied in a comic art since it attracts more the attention
of the people specifically the viewer of a popular newspaper and magazine.
This element is very important to captivate the children’s interest.

4. Texture is the external characteristic of an accurate art. We can feel it by

touching or by thinking of touching it. There are several types of texture.
• Tactile texture is about the physical appearance of a certain features.

3
• Artificial texture is observed through pictures that giving you a hint
about the real texture of this object.
• Visual texture is giving of impression of a true entity frequently
accomplished by using color, lines, or shape repeatedly.

5. Words/Texts are absolutely used in comic art for it directly conveys ideas and
concepts to the reader.

Principles Applied in Comic Art

To create your own comic art, you have to consider the following two
principles which may help you as an artist convey the real purpose or intention.
These basic principles are known as contrast and emphasis.

1. Contrast is evidently visible when the element of color value (lightness

against darkness) is applied. It is used to create interesting effect by
showing/reflecting difference.

4
2. Emphasis is a principle of art which pertains to the application of visual
elements to attract attention to a particular area. Emphasis is
highlighting or giving focus to specific object using color, texture, or even
shape.
