LECTURE:
INTRODUCTION:
Fundamental body movements are the building blocks necessary for physical activities like sports and
dance. This lesson explains the components of the fundamental body movements like locomotor
movements and non-locomotor movements.

DISCUSSION OF THE LESSON:

You may not think much about simple body movements like walking, bending, or kicking a ball;
however, fundamental body movements are the building blocks necessary for more complex
physical activities. Playing sports, exercising, and dancing all require a command of simple,
fundamental body movements.
This lesson explains the components of two fundamental body movements: locomotor and non-
locomotor.

What is Fundamental Movement?

These are movement patterns that involve various body parts and provide the basis of physical
literacy.

Fundamental movement skills are the foundational movements, or precursor patterns, to the
more specialized and complex skills used in play, games and specific sports.

Physical literacy describes the ability of a person to instruct the body to perform an action
accurately and with confidence and to recognize the physical, social, cognitive and emotional
attributes required to do so effectively.

literacy

For that reason, students should master these movement concepts during early childhood development
and elementary school physical education. Studies show that students are more likely to stay active
when fundamental body movements are mastered at that age. When fundamental body movements are
not mastered at a young age, students are unable to participate in certain physical activities as they
grow older. For example, a student who never learns to dribble a ball cannot later participate on the
middle school basketball team.

Locomotor refers to body movements that move the body from one place to another. They

cause the body to travel. There are eight main locomotor movements.
These are examples of locomotor movements:

1. Walking- is shifting one’s weight from one foot to another.

2. Running- is moving with longer strides and in faster speed than walking.
3. Hopping- is springing one foot and landing on the same foot.
4. Skipping- is done with a step and a hop using the same foot.
5. Jumping- is springing on one foot or both feet (on landing always bend knees slightly.)
6. Leaping- is springing on one foot and landing on the other foot (wide stride)
7. Sliding- is done by gliding on the floor sideward or forward using the right and left foot alternately.
8. Galloping- is stepping on one foot and cutting the other, either sideward or forward.

Non-Locomotor are movements done by a part or several parts of the body in any direction with a fixed base of
support. It is also called as Axial Movement. For example, swinging your arms back and forth. Notice that non locomotor
movements are often combined with locomotor

movements, such as walking and swinging your arms.

These are examples of non-locomotor movements:

1. Bending or Flexing- is moving of muscles around a joint where two body parts meets.
2. Stretching or Extending- is done by straightening or extending any part of the body from the
joints.
3. Lifting or Raising- is elevating a part of the body, usually for the arms and legs.
4. Twisting- is moving a part of the body around a long axis, usually for the head and the body.
5. Rotating or Encircling- is done by moving a part of the body around axis.
6. Swinging- is a pendular movement below an axis.
7. Swaying- is a pendular movement above an axis.
8. Vibration- movements like shaking and vibrating.
9. Circumduction – movements in circular motion.
10. Adduction – movements toward the center of the body. (2:13)
11. Abduction – movements away from the center of the body.
