Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Education is one of the most important things that a person must have. Without this, as

many say, we're nothing. "The purpose of education has always been to everyone, in

essence, the same—to give the young the things they need to develop in an orderly,

sequential way into members of society."–John Dewey, "Individual Psychology and

Education," The Philosopher, 12, 1934

With this rapidly evolving COVID-19 outbreak, having 539k total cases as of now,

February 9, 2021, here in the Philippines and having 106M total cases worldwide, the

way of learning drastically changes as the government began to implement distance

education methods of learning with the use of educational technology or electronic

learning (e-learning). Studies have shown that learners are having difficulty in

understanding the lessons given by them. In our observation and through experience,

many students have developed tardiness when learning lessons throughout the whole

week or even months. However, most of the students also developed habits of studying to

keep up in lessons and be able to graduate.

Page 1

Distance learning, also called distance education, e-learning, and online learning, a form

of education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers and

students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-

teacher and student-student communication.

We came across a more technical explanation of the definition of habit from the

Merriam-Webster Dictionary “A behaviour pattern acquired by frequent repetition or

physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance.”

We can interpret from this definition that habit is a behavioural pattern that is repeated

regularly.

While the definition of study is to spend time learning about something (yourdictionary.com).

Most of the students are used to listening to lessons in a classroom with other students. They

often have group studies and as of today, the setup they are used to have changed. They have to

sit for like hours on the table with gadgets answering lessons and sometimes they just don't.

Because of this, researchers want to know what are the study habits of ABM learners in Colegio

De La Purísima Concepción.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the habits of ABM learners in CPC during the pandemic for

the School year 2020-2021

Specifically, it attempted to answer the following question:

Page 2

1. What are the positive and negative outcome if they will continue the habits that they

intend to do?

2. What are the changes routines of the learners before and after pandemic has occurred?

3. What are the ways that can help improve their routine in taking their task and activities

during this pandemic?

Hypothesis

1. ABM students of CPC have different kinds of habits when it comes to studying.

There are also a lot of positive outcome that they might build when they do their

habits, just like when their habits are studying in advance and answering their

activities advance or on time. There are also negative outcome that might occur when

they do their habits, just like procrastinating because the due of their submission is

next week or because the teachers accepts their submission even it is late.

2. Before the pandemic occurred students may have different kinds of habits that they

used to do before, but when the pandemic spreads over the world and changes the

normal way of living, students might have change their habit especially when it
comes in their studies. Their habits in studying may change according to the students

will and determination of his/her education.

Page 3

3. There are many things that happened many people are affected with this pandemic

and the new normal. Students are also one of the main factors that have been affected.

In these case some of the students loses the determination in their studies, but there

are also many ways to bring their determination back and to help them improve their

habits in studying.

4. The learners’ studying habits have drastic changes upon adjusting in their shift to

online learning.

5. Adjusting from face-to-face classes to online learning will affect the academic

performances of the learner.

6. The participants will be honest in answering the given questionnaire.

Page 4

Scope and Delimitation the Study

The study will mainly focus on understanding and describing the study habits of the

ABM learners in CPC during the pandemic. The researchers will determine the

differences between the participants’ studying habits before and during the pandemic and

their experiences on how to cope with the changes of the environment they are used to. In

this study, the researchers will also find the reason behind the habits of the ABM learners

in CPC, and what have caused them to do these kind of habits.

Conceptual/Theoretical Framework

Independent variables Dependent variables

Time management

Learning skills Study Habits

Study skills
Page 5

The independent variable as it influences the dependent variable

The effective study habit is contingent on keen intellectual competence, stable emotion

and relevant activities deliberately directed to construct knowledge and develop skills to

attain a goal. In a study by Cardelle-Elawar and Nevein (2003) study habit is considered

as the application of an individual’s intelligence, emotion, and activities towards the

acquisition of knowledge and skills to accomplish an assignment.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

The finding of the study will be beneficial to the following:

CPC ABM students - this study will help them to determine what kind of habits in their

studies they have and how can they maintain or improve those habits. It can guide them

to open their eyes and realize the things that might change their future and achieved their

goal.

Teachers- The result of the study will help them to give their students some support and

encourage them to study hard and help them with their struggles. It can help them

understand different kinds of students and what can of things are they capable of.
Page 6

Administrators - this study will benefit the administrators since they will be aware of the

study habits that ABM learners do and they will, later on, realize that they can make

programs that encourage students to be diligent.

Future researchers- this study will benefit future researchers since they can refer to this to

formulate their ideas regarding this study. This will benefit them also to understand more

the habits of studying and be able to learn something from it.

Definition of Terms

Study Habits -the behaviors used when preparing for tests or learning academic material

Time Management -the ability to use one’s time effectively or productively, especially at

work.

Pandemic - (of a disease) prevalent over a whole country or the world

Learning Skills -a term that describes the tasks involved in learning, including time

management, note-taking, reading effectively, study skills, and writing test.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) – a highly contagious viral illness caused by

severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Distance education- also called distance learning, is the education of students who are not

physically present at a school

Review of Related Literature

Local Studies

According to Karl Nicole Nucum, a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in English Major in

Broadcast Journalism, if you want to be successful in studies then you must develop

positive study habits that require great discipline on your own. He enumerated habits that

are highly effective for a student. He mentioned taking initiative and knows how to set

goals that will keep you motivated and focused. He didn't forget to put regular breaks in

studying and mentioned The Pomodoro as an effective time management technique.

According to S. Bonito from the University of the Philippines, Open University, learning

style is an important variable in students' academic performance. In a study done by

Graham, Garton, and Gowdy (2001), learning style was reported to be important on how

students learn and teachers teach student-teacher interaction and students’ academic

achievement. Various learning styles of students require different teaching strategies to

improve the academic performance of students. The article from Paramount direct says

that learning in the new normal is a challenge for the teachers, students, and even parents.

This new way of learning brought by the COVID-19 pandemic can be an additional
challenge during this difficult time. It was listed in the article what students need to attain

to be prepared and engaged academically to retain what they have learned.

Page 8

First, they need to set up a place where they can have peace with studying. It's a place

where there's no interruption at all. They need to familiarize themselves with technology

so that when accessing an online class they will have it easy. Last and the most important

is they need to establish a routine. Distance learning doesn't mean you can be

unproductive on your whole day. Having a routine will help you to track your day and it

allows students to accomplish day by day tasks which is also important on this pandemic.

Deadlines are all over the place and establishing routine can help you to create a smooth

transition between activities.

In addition, the importance of establishing a routine is that it can help you to decline

stress, and leads you to better mental health. More time to relax and less anxiety. A lack

of healthy stress management techniques can put you at greater risk for your overall

health.

Since automatic assessments are used in many systems to give students immediate and

personalized feedback allowing them to serve exercises regardless of time and place.

However, this creates new challenges for students because they are required to

independently regulate their own learning. Because of the lack of direct guidance, it is

easy for students to resort to bad habits.

Page 9

According to some research, there are students who developed bad habits when it comes

to studying. They enumerated some of the bad habits and first in the list is cramming.

According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, sleeping and waking up

without consistency are most likely to have lower grades. With cramming, you may end

up with both low grades and poor health. From the research study of Stanford University,

they revealed that multitasking can make you less productive than finishing one task at a

time. They also added not making an outline a bad habit since outline helps you to

organize and keep track of what you need to study, without this, there's a high probability

that you will miss crucial topics and will face a grade that you don't expect to get. Using

social media while studying, especially in our situation today, can sometimes be helpful

and sometimes are not. It's normal to see students hooked on their smartphones since we

are using technology for learning as of now. But it can be sometimes a distraction, some

may be browsing on different social media accounts because they might miss something

and that can lead to a bad habit.

Maria Angelica Salcedo - Relucio from the department of education, stated from her

article "Factors Affecting the study Habits of grade eleven Students in One National High

school in Pangasinan Philippines" that because of the high numbers of Grade eleven

students that have reached below-average in academic performance, the school head
gathered all the teachers in SHS department and conducted a plan regarding of the

performance of the students.

Page 10

Their study was centered to determine the factors that affects the study habits of the

Grade 11 SHS students. Most of the respondents are female and have a low monthly

family income. Majority of them never take down notes, instead they only read. Those

who have poor study habits have their own reasons and responsibilities to take care of

and the parents should the guidance and care of their children in order to show interest

and concern about their academic work.

According to Ebele & Olofu (2017), in their study entitled “Study Habit and Its Impact

on Secondary School Students’ Academic Performance in Biology in the Federal Capital

Territory,” revealed that there is a significant relationship between the said variables.

This implied that students who developed good study are likely to have a better

academic.

One of the essential parts in the field of education is learning how-to-study. This holds,

most especially for the students no matter where they are or what programs they are

taking, whether they are enrolled in a top engineering school in the Philippines, or a

technical communication school somewhere in Manila, or even in the most advanced

architecture university; their success will all depend on one thing – effort. (Mapua, 2016)

Study habits play a vital role in students of any age. Such study habits will determine

students’ success in their educational career.

Page 11

Olvido (2010) conducted a descriptive-correlational study entitled “Study Habits,

Attitudes towards Biology and Performance among Philippine Science High School

Students,” which determined the study habits and attitudes of 58 second-year students

from the Philippine High School Western Visayas towards biology and performance. The

study habits and attitudes of the students were explored further in terms of differences

and relationships. The results revealed that second-year PSHSWV students have

desirable study habits and favorable attitudes towards biology and showed good

academic performance. There were no significant differences and relationships observed

in the study habits and attitudes towards biology and understanding. In this research, the

eight areas of study habits contributed to the prediction of the student’s performance in

biology.

Besides, as stated by the report of Kamai (2017), the Philippines has the slowest internet

connectivity in Asia. Which also affects the students' assessment results and could lead to

lack of motivation to study.

And as reported by Karalis (2020), what is worth studying after returning to normality,

are the implications that have arisen for the day after, that is, what adjustments need to be

made, the extent of the situation and to define the basic dimensions of education and

learning in formal education systems and organization amid educational disruptions.

Page 12

Foreign Studies

T. Gonzalez et al. (2020) in their article “Influence of COVID-19 confinement on

students’ performance in higher education”, due to the pandemic, many countries

suspended face-to-face teaching and exams affecting a lot of students.

In terms of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on different countries’ education

systems many differences exist.

Altogether, the data they collected indicates that autonomous learning in this scenario has

increased students’ performance and higher scores are to be expected.

Some education systems announced exceptional holidays to better prepare for this

distance-learning scenario.

There are however other important tasks in the learning process, such as assessment or

autonomous learning, that can still be challenging without the direct supervision of

teachers.

The objective of this article is to reduce the uncertainty in the assessment process in

higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Page 13

While some countries suspended in-person classes from March/April of last year -until

further notice-, others were less restrictive, and universities were advised to reduce face-

to-face teaching and replace it with online solutions wherever practicable.

To achieve this goal, the researchers analyse students’ learning strategies before and after

confinement.

The study presented in this article involved more than 450 students enrolled in 3 subjects

of different degrees from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) during three

academic years, including data obtained in the 2019/2020 academic year, when the

restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been in force.

On one hand, students could be achieving higher scores than in previous years due to the

cheating in online exams or with changes in the format of the evaluation tools.

Various e-learning platforms enable interaction between teachers and students, and, in

some cases, national television shows or social media platforms are being used for

education.
Fortunately, there is a range of modern tools available to face the challenge of distance

learning imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Page 14

This lack of homogeneity is caused by such factors as the start and end dates of academic

years and the timing of school holidays.

Another article discussing study habits during the pandemic is “Online school has more

negative impacts than positive” written by Katherine Northenor (2020).

As discussed from the previous study, because of the confinement, students are not able

to attend their classes physically and a lot of classes are being held online.

Online school has been implemented all throughout the world for students to obtain their

education amidst the breakout of COVID-19.

This causes major negative impacts to the student’s education and grades.

The pandemic shut down schools around the beginning of March earlier this year, and

over 1.2 billion students world-wide are not physically attending school.

Most public schools are still using online learning to avoid students coming in-person to

school, but some, along with several private schools have gone back.
Online school’s negative implications can easily be fixed through students coming

physically to school.

Page 15

Additionally, by using online learning students are socially distanced from others that

could expose them to the coronavirus, so it has many health benefits for students and

their loved ones.

Due to the lack of social interaction, online school can cause students and faculty to

experience social isolation.

Negative impacts of online learning are seen in the technicality of the actual use of it.

Like anything, online school has its pros and cons, but the problem is that the negatives

of electronic learning outweigh the positives.

Technology is not always efficient and can cause major disruptions to classes.

Online allows students to be engaged in school while not having to physically attend it,

keeps students safe from coming in contact with COVID-19, and is cost effective.

Although online learning is helpful in keeping our community safe during COVID-19,

the difficulties that arise are much more prominent than the positives.
This version of learning allows students to participate in school through synchronous and

asynchronous lessons that teachers give through the school’s preferred method of

communication.

Page 16

The discussion in the “Impact of Coronavirus Pandemic on Education” by Edeh Onyema

et al. (2020) is also about how the outbreak of the Coronavirus negatively affected

educational activities worldwide.

The coronavirus pandemic affected educational systems worldwide, leading to the

widespread closures of schools (Wikipedia, 2020b).

It created serious disruptions in academic activities, as well as in career plans.

It could negatively affect the academic interest and performance of students.

Besides, many students do not have the necessary access to supportive technologies

which makes it harder to maximize the potentials of learning technology during school

closures.

As part of the global efforts to combat COVID-19, many countries across the world

closed down schools in an attempt to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the CDC, “longer closures may result in more students congregating outside

of schools.

No doubts, unplanned school closures can cause severe problems for students, educators,

parents and the society at large.

Page 17

Some of the countries that closed down schools due to COVID-19 include, Nigeria,

Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, China, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Japan, Iran,

USA, France, Spain, Italy, North and South Korea, Lebanon, Vietnam, Thailand,

Germany, and South Korea just to mention but a few.

Quentin (2014), states that school closing is very controversial, and it can have spillover

effects on a large number of students in receiving schools.

The US Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) also expressed concerns about

the implications of school closures.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

(UNESCO) monitoring, over 100 countries implemented nationwide closures, impacting

over half of the world’s student population (UNESCO, 2020a).

School closures carry high social, educational and economic costs, and the disruptions

they cause touch people across communities, but their impact is particularly severe for

disadvantaged persons and their families (UNESCO, 2020b).

Page 18

However, against all odds, mathematical model and empirical analysis of reactive

closures of schools in past pandemics indicates that it reduces the total number of cases in

the community by 25 percent and postpones the peak of the pandemic by a week or two,

while proactive closures of school during pandemics remains one of the most beneficial

interventions that can be employed to mitigate the impact of epidemic disease (Erika and

Nicholas, 2020).

Though, technology can be used to remedy some of the fallouts from school closures, but

it cannot replace the important effect of face-to-face interactions by students and

teachers.

The literatures enumerated above are related to the study the researchers are currently

conducting. These studies directly mention that the role of the pandemic and how it has

impacted the students’ education and study habits.

In an article, Wagner et al. pointed out that learning at home includes many types of

learning is limited to the assigned tasks from teachers only. Due to the attack of Covid-

19, students have to stay at home, adjust their study habits, and deal with technological

challenges at the same times.

The relationship between student’s time on homework or studying at home and learning

results are still being debated. Factors that influence the time spent studying at home are

gender differences, motivation, academic interest, school anxiety, and parental pressure.

Page 19

Romero-Rodriguez et al. underlined the necessity of Learners self-efficacy and self-

regulation towards sustainable Learning trajectory, several studies have been taken to

examine student’s Learning habits.

There is a limited number of studies regarding students studying at home behaviors

during sudden school termination, in which the students are required to stay at home and

have to adjust their living and Learning habits. Due to pandemic student also have to face

potential mental issues and risks the educational systems worldwide have to face.

This is one of the first empirical studies investigating the effect of the sudden shift from

face-to-face to online distance learning due to COVID-19 lockdown at one of the

universities in Egypt. Comparison of grades was made between 376 business students

who completed a face-to-face course in spring 2019 and 372 students who completed the

same course but fully online via distance learning mode in spring 2020 during the
lockdown. T-test was conducted to compare grades of quizzes, course work, and final

exam for the two groups. Chi-square test was used to compare grade distribution for both

groups. The effect of gender, credit hours, age, and CGPA was assessed. The results

suggested that there was no statistically significant difference in students’ grades.

Page 20

The spread of the corona virus (COVID-19) forces face-to-face learning activities to turn

into virtual meetings in various online applications. This new learning system requires

students to adjust their learning habits and be different from what they receive in

conventional face-to-face classes. Study habits are at the core of a learner’s academic

success.

Arieta, Gementiza, and Saco (2017) highlighted that study habits play a significant role in

students’ life. The success or failure of each student depends on their study habits. The

study also says that study is an art and requires practice and effort. The success of each

student depends on ability, intelligence, and action of the students.

Page 21

Chapter 3

Methodology

This chapter presents the research design of the study, the population of the study, sampling

procedure and sample size, tools of data collection, finalization of the tool, data collection

procedure, methods of data analysis, and interpretation that is appropriate for the study.

Purpose of the Study and Research Design

The purpose of the study was to know how ABM learners of Colegio de la Purísima Concepción

study their online lessons and be able to determine different habits they have. The researchers

used quantitative research in this study. It used the survey as a method to gather data collection

in the form of questionnaires from the respondents.

The survey method is used to gather information, people were asked a series of questions about a

particular subject. A formal list of the questionnaire is prepared.  To put it simply, it is a

technique used for questioning individuals who are related to the said topic.

Page 22

The Population of the Study

The study is conducted by the grade 12 Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) students

of Colegio de la Purísima Concepción.

The respondents of the study are the 30 ABM students of Colegio de la Purísima Concepción.

Sampling Procedure and Sample Size

Sampling is a procedure of choosing a subgroup from a population to participate in the study; it

is needed in almost all forms of data collection as in most research processes it is simply not

possible to gain data from every available source. The subject of the study is the 30 ABM

students of Colegio de la Purísima Concepción. Researchers used stratified sampling and there
will be 3O respondents from grade ABM students whereby they were grouped according to their

gender.

Tools of Data Collection

The tools that the researchers will use in order to collect data are the participants for the study,

surveys and questionnaires.

The participants of the study will consist of 30 Grade ABM students of Colegio de la Purísima

Concepción. Proportional or stratified sampling was used in order to divide the participants into

smaller sub-groups.

Page 23

The survey and questionnaires that will be used for this study was made by the researchers.

Finalization of the tool

The questionnaire form that will be prepared and given to the participants of this study will

consist of at least 30 questions and 5 scales of option –Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree,

Strongly Disagree-  for them to select in order to make the survey easier for the participants to

answer.

Data Collection Procedures

Data was collected using a survey sheet questionnaire and was described in terms of time

management, note-taking, and test preparations. The questionnaire will be distributed to the 30

respondents.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

The data that was extracted from the questionnaire were classified and organized. Students'

achievement having good or poor study habits during pandemic differ significantly and

developing study habits at home. Although it is the students who know and use good rules of

study, the teachers need to be well acquainted with the functioning of study rules so that they

may give guidance in study practices. Weak study habits of the students affect academic

performance drastically. There is a limited number of studies regarding students studying at

home behaviours during a pandemic.

Page 24

Improvements in the study habits of students are necessary so that they perform

well in their studies. This data described the effects of students' study habits in this time of the

pandemic.
