1 a. List out the specifications of Load compensation. (04 Marks)


b. What are the types of loads that need compensation? (06 Marks)

c. With necessary figure, explain the fundamental theory of power factor, its correction in
single phase system. (10 Marks)

2 a. Explain the desired compensating susceptance in terms of instantaneous currents and


voltages. (12 Marks)
b. What are the requirements to be satisfied for bulk power transmission by AC? Explain in
brief. (08 Marks)

3 a. Write the fundamental transmission line equation and briefly explain the following terms :
i) Wave length ii) Propagation constant iii) Surge Impedance iv) Natural
loading. (10 Marks)
b. For a symmetrical line on no load, explain the effect of line length, load power and power
factor in voltage and reactive power. (10 Marks)

4 a. What are the objectives and limitations of series compensation? (08 Marks)
b. Obtain an expression for maximum transmissible power for a symmetrical line with
midpoint series capacitor and shunt reactor. (12 Marks)

5 a. Explain the need for adjustable reactive compensation. (08 Marks)


b. Describe various voltage disturbances with reference to four characteristic time period.

6 a. With necessary diagram, explain the working principle of thyristor controlled reactor and
thyristor switched reactor. (12 Marks)
b. Discuss the various Re – insertion schemes of series capacitors. (08 Marks)

7 a. Explain the working of a synchronous condenser as a reactive power compensator.

8 a. What are the transmission benefits of reactive power co-ordination in power system?
