Lesson
Using the Degrees of Adjectives in
1 Making Comparisons

Adjectives are used to describe, identify, modify or

quantify nouns or pronouns. Adjectives have three
degrees that compare one thing to another.
The three degrees of adjectives are positive,
comparative, and superlative. The comparative degree is
used in comparing two subjects or objects while the
superlative degree is used in describing three or more.

What Is It

Adjectives are compared in many ways. They have

different degrees of comparison namely: positive,
comparative and superlative.
6
Positive Degree: An adjective is in the positive degree
when there is no comparison. It is the normal adjective
form which is used in describing nouns and pronouns.
ex: She is beautiful.
A tiny bud landed on my sandwich.
Comparative Degree: An adjective is in the
comparative degree when it is used to compare two
nouns or pronouns.
ex: I am taller than my sister.
Health is more important than money.
Superlative Degree: An adjective is in superlative
degree when it is used to compare more than two
nouns/pronouns. We use the article 'the' before the
superlative degree.
ex: Nica is the eldest of the four sisters.
He is the most generous person I have ever met.
Most one or two-syllable adjectives form their
comparative by adding -er, and their superlative by
adding -est.
Most two or multi-syllable adjectives form their
comparative and superlative by adding more and most
to the positive degree.
