I. Globalization, Migration, and Hybridity


Apply critical reading and close analysis. Answer briefly the following questions. 5 points

Raymond Williams, a foundational figure in cultural studies, prefaces his chapter on


the culture of the nations with a story: "There was this Englishman who worked in London
office of a multinational corporation based in the United States. He drove home one evening
in his Japanese car. His wife, who worked in a firm which imported German kitchen
equipment, was already home. Her small Italian car was often quicker through the traffic.
After a meal which included New Zealand lamb, Californian carrots, Mexican honey, French
cheese, and Spanish wine, they settled down to watch a programme on their television set,
which was made in Finland. The programme was a retrospective celebration of the war to
recuperate the Falkland Islands. As they watched it they felt very warmly patriotic, and very
proud to be British" (1983, 177).

1. Analyze Raymond William's scenario. What different observation/s about globalization


does it present?
- Raymond’s prefaces his cultural story with a twist. The different observation about
globalization is he almost put every country in a context, like an Italian car is more
capable in traffics. He put a distinct information in every each country and as the
Englishman a he is patriotic and proud after they watched the television because the
context of his nation is deserved to be proud of.
2. "Migrant" is different from an "Immigrant". Contrast the two terms.
- there are a slight difference between this two but its almost the same. Its just migrant is a
smaller scale of movement while immigrant is a international scale.

II. Class, Ideology, and Cultural Forms


Individuality pertains to our "natural selves", a set of qualities that distinguish us from other
people. The following aphorism validate this perspective. Explain each. 5 points

1. "I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet." -Mahatma Gandhi
- Gandhi simply wants to persive is that no one even his relatives or close ones cant make
him think of bad things or unpleasant ones. The dirty feet that he pertains is the unpleasant
accusation, thougths, enligthment and more that will make him no good.
2. "Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's
definition of your life, but define yourself." –Harvey Fierstein
- Harvey wants to say that never suffer without anyone watching and never put yourself into
the place were pity is the most merciful thing youll get. Stand up by yourself and by doing
so show it to the crowd and listen to no one perspective but only yours. That’s what he
meant.
3. "The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong yourself."- Michael de
Montaigne
- Michael wants us to know that the best thing that we can get is to learn and to have the
knowledge and strength to know what is truly for us, to know that we belongs to ourselves.

III. Gender and Sexuality
Being a "woman" or a "man" is a matter of gender rather than sex. Differentiate the two

1. What is the difference between gender and sex?


- Well as we know it some says these two are just the same but no, sex simply tell id you
are a men or a woman, whie gender tells us about the behavior of onself.
