DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

 Cubically notched cuboid tower, The Kanchanjunga Apartments are

a direct response to the present culture, the escalating urbanization,
and the climatic conditions for the region.
 They pay homage to the vernacular architecture that once stood on
the site before the development in a number of ways.

THE EAST-WEST AXIS OFFERS THE BEST VIEWS (OF THE ARABIAN SEA TO THE
WEST AND THE HARBOR TO THE EAST) AND CATCHES ALL THE SEA BREEZES, BUT
ALSO BRINGS INTO THE BUILDINGS THE HOT AFTERNOON SUN AND THE HARD
MONSOON RAINS.

• This building has to be oriented east – west to catch prevailing sea

breezes & to open up the best view of the city.
• Unfortunately these are also the directions of the hot sun & the heavy
monsoon rains.
• Each apartment provided with a deep two story high garden terrace
that is oriented away from the sun so as to afford protection from the
elements.

MODULARITY
• With its concrete construction and large
areas of white panels, it bears a strong
resemblance to modern apartment
buildings in the West.
• However, the garden terraces of
Kanchenjunga Apartments are actually a
modern interpretation of a feature of the
traditional Indian bungalow: the veranda.
• In a bungalow, the veranda wraps the
main living area. The colour expert says
that the quality of sunlight, climate and
culture influence colour choices: hence
one would observe a preference for blue
and its shades in the west while in India
and other Asian countries one finds a
