Dear Reader,
Greetings from Wipro!

In this issue, we will continue with few more critical parameters like current, CRI.

Please feel free to contact us for any additional information / support.

Please write to our Lighting Solutions team at: atul.jawase@wipro.com for any design / technical
support.

Enjoy Reading!

White LED--Variable Current Operation
• As LED is a Current source, it can be driven at different currents

• At different Current operation, LED Wattage and Light Output will change

• It is advised generally that the LEDs should be run at Nominal rated current

White LED--Variable Current Operation
• Changing of Light Output and Wattage are not proportional

• 350 mA LED when driven at 700 mA, gives only 35 % higher light output but consumes 70 %
higher power.

• If the current of LED is increased, then light output increases, however, luminous efficacy
of LED drops

White LED--Variable Current Operation
• If the current of LED is increased, heat generation also increases.

• In that case, additional heat sink is required to maintain good ‘LED life’.

• With increase of current, life of LED also reduces.

• Good practice – All LEDs are driven at Nominal Rated Current +/- 5% Tolerance

White LED—Colour Rendering Index
• The colour rendering index
(CRI) of a light source is a
quantitative measure of its ability
to reproduce the colours of
various objects faithfully in
comparison with an ideal or
natural light source

• The index is measured from 0-

100, with a perfect 100
indicating that colours under the
light source appear the same as
they would under natural
sunlight

White LED – Colour Rendering Index
• Lights with a CRI greater than 80 are considered to be more than acceptable for most
applications

• Lights with a CRI greater than 90 are generally considered “High CRI” lights and used in very
specific applications e.g. fashion retail.

White LED—Colour Rendering Index
• Testing for CRI requires special machinery designed
specifically for this purpose

• During this test, the light spectrum of a lamp is

analyzed onto eight different colors (or “R values”),
termed R1 through R8. There are 15 measurements,
but the CRI measurement only uses the first 8.

• The lamp receives a score from 0-100 for each color,

based on how natural the colour is rendered in
comparison with how the colour looks under a
“perfect” or “reference” light source at the same
colour temperature as that of lamp.

Did You Know?
• Ching Tang discovered that light can be created by sending current through a carbon material.
• Steven Van Slyke and Tang built the first OLED at Kodak in 1987. Later he worked on OLED
displays. His first light was a bright green light at 10 volts.
• Ching Tang continued to work on OLEDs at the University of Rochester.
