The shop Macy’s in New York is very famous all over
the world, but it started as a small shop where people
could buy dried foods. Rowland Hussey Macy was a
businessman who wanted to make money. He opened a
few more shops, but they didn’t make much money
and they all closed. But he was a strong personality
and he believed that he could become rich. In 1858 at
the age of thirty-six he opened Macy’s on Sixth
Avenue in New York. He decided on a red star as the
shop’s sign because he was a sailor before he owned
Macy’s. On the first day he didn’t have many
customers and at the end of the day he had just $11.06.
But his shop started to become more popular and at the
end of the year he made about $85,000. Macy died in
1877 but the shop continued to be in the Macy family
until 1895.
Macy’s changed shopping in many ways. First, it
introduced new products such as the tea bag and
coloured bath towels. Also, it was the first shop to give
one of the senior management jobs to a woman,
Margaret Getchell. By 1902 Macy’s was very large so
it moved to Broadway. Macy’s continued to be very
popular and in 1918 its total sales were $36 million.
The company gave jobs to many people from all over
the world. It helped them to start a new life in New
York and earn money for their families. In 1924 all the
workers at Macy’s organized a ‘Thanksgiving Day
Parade’. The workers dressed in colourful clothes and
walked through the city singing and dancing to say
thank you to their new country. Today the parade still
happens and Macy’s has shops all over the USA.
