MOMENT OF INERTIA
1. MOI is a geometric property of the cross-section of the beam.
2. It gives us the idea of how flexible the beam is.
3. It is represented by I

Lets understand the concept of moment of inertia. Which is the strongest


beam? Yes, a beam made up of steel or any other material could be the
strongest. But here we are talking about how to achieve a strongest beam w.r.t
its geometric properties, i.e., its cross-section. So, which is the strongest shape?

 MOI is the bending capability of the beam
 Distance between the top half of the beam and the centroidal axis gives the
indication of how prone it is to bending
 If the distance is small = more bending
 If the distance is large = less bending
