Instructions: Students will do Activities 1 to 5 on Mathematics lab file or on A –

4 size sheets. Q6 to Q 20 will be done on assignment sheets.

Q1.Activity -1:

BECOME A MATHEMAGICIAN
Number 1089
For this trick, you will need a pencil and two pieces of paper. First write
down your number on one of the sheets of paper. Fold your paper so that
your friend can’t see it. Now give a sheet of paper to your friend. Tell him
or her to think of a number and then write it down. But before he or she
writes it down, tell him or her to have a three‐digit number and have the
1
largest number first then the smaller number and then the smallest
number. For example: 742 or 971.
• Tell him not to let you see his number.
• Next tell him or her to reverse the number Now tell him or her to subtract
the smallest number from the largest one.
• Now ask your friend to reverse that number around.
• Now add them both together.
• This would be 1089. Now give him or her your paper and then watch his
face when he sees that your number was 1089. The answer is always going
to be 1089 so always write that number down.
1. Let the number be 861
2. Reverse the number 168
3. 861 – 168 = 693
4. Reverse of 693 is 396
5. 693 + 396 = 1089

Q2. Activity-2 :
Subtopic: Angle sum property of a convex quadrilateral.
Description: On a coloured sheet of paper draw a convex quadrilateral ABCD. Cut
out the four angles and paste these cutouts so that there is no gap between them
and write the observation.
Q3. Linear Equations in one variable
Activity-3: Framing Linear Equations
Find out the age of your grandfather and father. Form a linear equation between
these two –
a) Age of your grandfather and your age.

2
b) Your age and your father's age.
Q4. Activity- 4

Vanishing Numbers : Take a A-4 size sheet or any other sheet and do the
activity given below :

Draw a square and write numbers in the corners, any four numbers. Subtract the
smaller number from the larger number on each side and place the answers
at the middle of the sides. Now make another square inside the first square by
joining the mid‐ points : Do the same with the figures of this square, and continue
doing it until....? What happens ? It finally comes to zero. Try it again with
different starting numbers, and see how it always comes down to 0. Try it on your
friends and family members. Let them choose the number.

Q5 Activity 5: .i) Take the printout of the given grid and colour all the
quadrilaterals with a different colour.
ii) Cut out of all the quadrilaterals along the dark lines.
iii) Draw all the possible diagonals of the quadrilaterals using a pencil.
iv) By folding all the quadrilaterals along the diagonals, complete the
given table.
v) Paste the unfolded quadrilaterals and the table in the Maths Lab File.

Q1. ACTIVITY: SPORE MAGIC

AIM: To make spore print of mushroom

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
1. A large sized mushroom.
2. Thick white sheet of paper

 Cut off its stalk and the lower portion of the mushroom, exposing
the gills.

 Place it gently, face down (gill- side down) on a thick sheet of

white paper.
 Add a few drops of water to the top of the mushroom cap to

CAUTION :
 Remember never consume wild mushrooms as they are generally
poisonous. Buy only edible mushrooms from the market for cooking.
 Wash your hands properly after the activity.

NOTE- TAKE A PICTURE OF THE OBSERVATION (SPORE PRINT) AND PASTE

IT IN YOUR PRACTICAL NOTEBOOK.

Imagine you have been asked by the government to develop a campaign to encourage people to stop
using plastic bag. You have to think how you are going to convince people. Think of a slogan and
design a poster for your campaign. Here are a few points that you can consider while designing your
poster: (It Should be done on A4 size sheet) ****
(i)Plastic once manufactured cannot be destroyed in any way.
(ii) To list a few, Plastic waste accumulated in landfills causes a lot of soil pollution over the years
since they are non-biodegradable. When plastic is burnt, the harmful fumes enter into the
atmosphere and has direct effect upon someone who breathes it. And so,
NO! we cannot eliminate plastic by burning it
(iii). Plastic also finds its way into drains and sewage pipes, clogging them; more often than not, this
may lead to water pollution directly and/or indirectly.
(iv) Animals sometimes, feed on plastic and die painfully as plastic chokes their digestive and
respiratory tracts. This is a very serious concern in many countries worldwide.
(v) There have also been incidents of little children suffocating while playing with plastic bags and
toys. The 'facts' mentioned above are only a few examples of what plastic can do

SUMMER VACCATION HOLIDAY HOMEWORK
CLASS VIII (Physics)
(2020- 2021)
Q.1 Draw a cartoon on any discovery of physics.
Q.2 Do activity of pasting pictures / drawing of pictures of application of effect
of force in each case. Write the effects also
Q.3 Activity–1 : Float or Sink
Take few objects such as nails, cork, wood, sponge, thermocol piece, and few
more objects (at least 10 more objects around you) which you can find easily
in your home and test all the objects by keeping in the water, for
floating/sinking.
Liquids exert force in the upward direction when objects are dipped into them.
This upward force is called buoyant force.
a. An object floats under the surface of a liquid if the down ward gravitational and
upward force by the liquid, acting on the body are equal and opposite.
b. If the gravitational force is greater than the upward force of the liquid, the object
sinks.
c. . If the upward force of liquid is greater than the downward gravitational force, the
object floats above the surface of water.

For the above said objects taken tabulate your observation as:

Activity–2 : To show that liquid pressure depends only upon
the height of the liquid column and not the volume of the liquid.

Material required -Three to four transparent plastic bottles of different capacities (2 litre,
1.5 litre, 1 litre and 0.5 litre), Nail or compass to make holes in the bottle, Cello tape, Meter
scale, Paper cup, a wooden stool or table to be used as a stand, water.

Method-
 Take three transparent plastic bottles of different capacities.

 Make one hole on the side of each of the bottle at the same distance from the base of
the bottles.
 Seal these holes with cello tape
 Make a mark near the top of the bottle of least height .Measure the height of this
mark from the bottom. Make marks at this height in the remaining two bottles too.
 Fill each bottle with water using a paper cup. Note that
the level of water is the same in all the bottles (till the
mark made on each bottle). Count the number of cups
used to fill each of the bottles.
 Fill each bottle with water using a paper cup. Note that
the level of water is the same in all the bottles (till the
mark made on each bottle). Count the number of cups
used to fill each of the bottles.
 Place one of the bottles on the wooden stool or table. Remove the
cello tape from the hole. The water stream will come out of the hole.
 Mark the point at which the water stream falls on the floor.
 Measure the distance of this mark from the base of the stand.

2
Bottle Distance of mark from stand

Answer the given question

a. What can you say about the distances recorded by you? Are they
approximately equal?
b. In the above activity, will you get the same observation if the level of water
in each bottle was different?
c. Shyama has two water tanks of equal volume in her house. One is placed on the left
of her kitchen which is on the ground floor and the other on the terrace of the second
floor. The water from which of the tank will come with a greater pressure and why?
Q.4 What forces are acting when a car is moving, a Parachutist is falling down and
in a flying Airplane. Think of at least 3 more examples from day to day life
and write the forces acting on them.

Q.5 List few examples along with pictures showing there is no change in state of
motion even after force is applied.

3
Q.6 The balloon shown here is full of water. Dhruv wants to make a hole in the
balloon so that water comes out with maximum pressure. At which point
should he make the hole

Q.7 What do you do to get maximum pressure with a minimum force? Name two

Appliances based on this fact.
