WEEK 2
Given a background on the criteria by which hotels are evaluated, how would you qualify a
hotel of quality?

A hotel is an establishment where visitors can temporarily reside in paid lodging areas
offering various services that will satisfy the customers' needs and wants. The facilities and
services are reflected in the competencies and capacities that a hotel can offer, wherein
measured by the accreditation standards released by the specialized government agency for the
tourism industry of a country. In the Philippines, the Department of Tourism published a basis for
the Accreditation Standards of Hotels in the country. It shows grounds on the grading system of
the Hotels within the country whether it gives limited service, select service, full service, or luxury.
The hotel classification given by the D.O.T. can provide useful marketing platforms for individual
hotels and for destinations wishing to promote the quality of their offer. It basically emphasizes
the strengths and weaknesses that hotels can provide to its customers. The Star Grading System
for Hotels, Resorts, and Apartment Hotels released by the Department of Tourism upholds
reasonable basis standards with regards to what hotels offer in terms of facilities and service
quality. Hence, the hotel classification of 4 - 5 Stars Hotels in the country are indisputable.

Hotel classification is the ranking of hotels, usually by using nomenclature such as stars (or
diamonds), with one star denoting basic facilities and standards of comfort and five stars denoting
luxury in facilities and services (UNWTO, 2015). The purpose is to inform intending guests in
advance on what can be expected in order to reduce the gap between expected and experienced
facilities and service delivery. The outstanding hotel classification (5 stars) criteria released by the
DOT have proven its degrees wherein it became my reference with the evaluation of outstanding
hotels. For a hotel to be rated in outstanding state, all aspects of the hotel such as venues,
facilities, management, services, and even the smallest details are in perfect condition. The
building design and construction of the enterprise shall meet the luxurious, exceptional interior
and exterior conditions which are constructed by high quality materials. Maintenance issues in all
terms concerning the building and facilities are solved as soon as possible (like it would only take
minutes or hours to fix). All furnitures and appliances shall provide great degree of comfort and
evidence of decrepit features are absent. Lighting must be in the highest quality which matches
the mood of the venue, and flooring must have no sign of dirt even not on shining surfaces.
Bedrooms must also provide luxurious facilities, space design, sound proof walls, windows with
an overlooking perfect view, and spacious areas where customers would probably rest.

Given the modern technology, a bedroom should be equipped with gadgets that can
enhance the experience during the stay (such as voice command appliances). Pillow menu, as
mentioned in the National Accommodation Standards, shall be available. Valet parking shall be
provided. Services involving various personnel must be available at all times. Arrival and
departure Process (receipt, payment options, transfer services) ought to be handled swiftly--not
elongating and wasting customers’ time. Restrooms are mostly the place that reflects the
management system of an establishment. It shall be maintained clean always and plumbing has
no signs of leaking. Furthermore, security should be in the top priority wherein excellent well-
trained personnel are scattered within the area for the customers to have a threat-free experience
during their stay. Amenities offered within the establishment shall be available 18-24 hours, with
trained staff for each service. Basically, what mentioned on the DOT’s Hotel Accreditation on the
outstanding state depicts what I believe to be offered by the establishment. Henceforth, I believe
that applying accessible tourism on an accommodation establishment reflects how good their
management and services are. Everybody has the right to experience the highest quality
accommodation considering whatever mental and physical state.
