PART A – Micro-Project Proposal

Title of Micro-Project : Solid modeling : Group A

To prepare a report on survey regarding solid modeling software used
in manufacturing industries

1.0 Brief Introduction:

Solid Modeling is the computer modeling of 3D solid objects. The objective of Solid Modeling is
to ensure that every surface is geometrically correct.

It is considered the most complex aspect to master in computer-aided design (CAD) because it

requires the CAD software to simulate the object from within and outside. This is critical as it
lets designers provide cutaways of the design, such as an engine and its components.

In short, solid modeling allows the design, creation, visualization and animation of digital 3D

models.

2.0 Aim of the Micro-Project:

1)To study solid modeling system.

2)To prepare a report on survey regarding solid modeling software used in manufacturing
industries*

3.0 Intended Course Outcomes:

1) Plan for survey regarding to solid modeling software ’s.

2) Maintain software tools and equipment’s.

3) To operate software tool and software.

4) plot a drawing for the given solid model using different software ’s.

5)Explode the assembly of part model.

6)Apply principles of technical drawings to create different 3D models.

7)Create a CAD Project Presentation.

8) Prepare assembly of part models using Assembly workbench of any parametric CAD
software.

4.0 Literature Review:

solid modeling techniques allows for the automation of several difficult engineering calculations
that are carried out as a part of the design process. Simulation, planning, and verification of
processes such as machining and assembly were one of the main catalysts for the development
of solid modeling. More recently, the range of supported manufacturing applications has been
greatly expanded to include sheet metal manufacturing, injection
molding, welding, pipe routing, etc. Beyond traditional manufacturing, solid modeling
techniques serve as the foundation for rapid prototyping, digital data archival and reverse
engineering by reconstructing solids from sampled points on physical objects, mechanical
analysis using finite elements, motion planning and NC path verification, kinematic and dynamic
analysis of mechanisms

PART B – Micro-Project Report

Title of Micro-Project

1.0 Rationale :

Solid modeling is a consistent set of principles for mathematical and computer modeling of three-
dimensional solids. Solid modeling is distinguished from related areas of geometric modeling and
computer graphics by its emphasis on physical fidelity. Together, the principles of geometric and solid
modeling form the foundation of 3D-computer-aided design and in general support the creation,
exchange, visualization, animation, interrogation, and annotation of digital models of physical objects.
Designers can use solid modeling technology to create photorealistic renditions of products. With their
high-quality textures and strategic lighting, these images often turn out better than actual photographs
taken by cameras. Viewers can examine every little detail of the model in high-quality resolution. The
solid modeling CAD software helps the designer to see the designed object as if it were the real
manufactured product. ... It also gives additional vision to the designer as to what more changes can be
done in the object. Solid modeling is used not only for creating solid models of machine parts, but also
the buildings, electric circuits and even of the human beings.

2.0 Course Outcomes Addressed:

1) Plan for survey regarding to solid modeling software ’s.

2) Maintain software tools and equipment ’s.

3) To operate software tool and software.

4) plot a drawing for the given solid model using different software ’s.

5)Explode the assembly of part model.

6) point wise integrates with design and analysis processes.

7) Interfaces with all components of simulation tool change.

8) Anylas technical drawings of solid modeling software used in manufacturing industries.

9) Apply principles of technical drawings to create different 3D models.

10)Utilize SolidWorks surfacing features and methods to create complex solid geometry.

3.0 Literature Review :

The first advancements in the history of 3D modeling came when the first commercially
available CAD or Computer Aided Design systems started coming out in the 1960s. The biggest
breakthrough came from Ivan Sutherland who introduced Sketchpad, also known as “Robot
Draftsman,” in 1963 with its revolutionary interface. Sketchpad established that computers can
be used not only for engineering or repetitive drafting but interactively by Designers and
potentially Artists.

In the same year, the General Motors and IBM partnership created the DAC-1, Design
Augmented by Computer, which was publicly presented in 1964 and used by General Motors
for the rest of the decade to speed up their car production workflow. It demonstrated that
computer design visualization can cut down workloads which would ’ve taken forever if the
drawing boards were used.
At the end of the decade, in 1968, Ivan Sutherland and David Evans founded the first 3D
graphics company, “Evans & Sutherland”. They started the company to produce hardware to
run the systems that were being developed but were soon also developing software. Their
appearance and success in the market inspired others to start up their own companies and
work on developing the technology.

6.0 Outputs of the Micro-Project:

Introduction:
Solid modeling is the most advanced method of geometric modeling in three dimensions. Solid modeling
is the representation of the solid parts of the object on your computer. The typical geometric model is
made up of wire frames that show the object in the form of wires. This wire frame structure can be two
dimensional, two and half dimensional or three dimensional. Providing surface representation to the
wire three dimensional views of geometric models makes the object appear solid on the computer
screen and this is what is called as solid modeling.

Construction - Drawing:
Data Collected :

Application of software
in design and
manufacturing
processes is one of the
resolutions many industries have resorted to in the 21st century.

Based on user base, here are the top 8 industrial design software applications:

1. Autodesk AutoCAD

When it comes to CAD software, Autodesk AutoCAD is arguably the most popular. The
software has been around for more than 35 years and is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS,
and Android too. It’s one of few CAD programs that work well on Mac computers. AutoCAD is
widely used by both professionals and beginners, not only because of its time-tested
capabilities in the world of product design, but also the software ’s intuitive user interface. A
lot of high schools and colleges use AutoCAD to introduce 3D design to students, making it a
common choice among young professionals

2.LabVIEW

Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench, more commonly referred to as

LabVIEW, is a design platform mainly used for creating industrial automation, data
automation programs, and instrument control. It ’s compatible with Windows, Mac OS,
various versions of UNIX, and Linux. Unlike all the aforementioned design software
applications, LabVIEW is not for creating 2D and 3D models on computers. The software is
used by companies to configure how their hardware or equipment interact with each other
and utilize available data.

3. Autodesk Inventor

In spite of its limited compatibility, Autodesk Inventor is one of the most recognizable names
in the industry and is used by major companies such as Aerotek, Flowverse, and ABEC. Some
key features include free-form and parametric modeling, stress analysis, dynamic simulation,
as well as part design automation. Versatility is Inventor’s most significant selling point. The
software is popular across various industries including but not limited to graphic design,
architecture, engineering, machinery, automotive, and manufacturing

4. CNC Software

Mastercam is the main CAD application offered by CNC Software. The company is one of the
first to provide a PC-based computer-aided design/manufacturing solution designed
specifically for engineers and designers.

The software suite is a combination of 2D/3D modeling platform and a set of configuration
tools for computer numerical controlled machine tools. The newer version of Mastercam
brings 3D wireframe modeling (as opposed to 2D modeling only in the original version)
functionality as well as broad compatibility with common CAD files.

5. SolidWorks

SolidWorks may be the most widely used CAD solution mainly due to its powerful rendering
capabilities, user-friendly interface, and relatively affordable cost. A great many users are in
the engineering and design industries, but it is less prevalent among those in the architectural
business. Many academic institutions also use SolidWorks as a 3D design learning tool.

6. Catia

Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application – better known as CATIA – is

another design software suite from Dassault Systèmes. The tools in CATIA are meant for
advanced engineering – aerospace, electrical parts, engine components, and power generator
systems. It’s a complex software built for expert users.

7. ANSYS

ANSYS engineering simulation software is used in a wide range of industries including

automotive, aerospace, defense, healthcare, energy, electronics, and consumer products.

8. PTC (Parametric Technology Corporation)

The primary offering from PTC is the Creo Suite, which is a 3D CAD design software
compatible with Windows operating system. Creo comes with parametric solid and direct
modeling along with all sorts of visualization functions including technical illustrations,
schematic design, orthographic views (2D), simulation, and element analysis. The suite
consists of multiple apps, with each app offering a different set of capabilities to intensify or
improve user’s roles and performance in product development.

Conclusion
solid modeling as practised today relies on the specific need for informational completeness in
mechanical geometric modeling systems, in the sense that any computer model should support all
geometric queries that may be asked of its corresponding physical object. The requirement implicitly
recognizes the possibility of several computer representations of the same physical object as long as any
two such representations are consistent. It is impossible to computationally verify informational
completeness of a representation unless the notion of a physical object is defined in terms of
computable mathematical properties and independent of any particular representation.

7.0 Skill Developed / learning out of this Micro-Project:

of theoretical concepts.

4.. Micro Project can help us to boost our skills and widen our horizon of thinking. It acts like a
beginner’s guide to do larger projects later in their career.
9.0 Area of Future Improvement:

1)The solid modeling CAD software helps the designer to see the designed object as if it were
the real manufactured product.

2) This helps the designer to be sure that the object looks exactly as they wanted it to be.

3) It also gives additional vision to the designer as to what more changes can be done in the
object.
