I am replaying Ride Your Wave's ecstatic montage, playful moments of youthful love with a song

that will surely wriggle its way to your auditory memory. The core of the animated film, however, is
what comes after this romance. A lovey-dovey tale morphs into a story of loss and grieving,
poignantly expressed in its fantastical premise: the mourning lover can summon through their
signature song the soul of her deceased boyfriend who is in the form of water.
Water becomes a motif of life and death, of love and loss, best expressed in its amorphous and
drowning nature. This theme is evident in the title. One is allowed to grieve, not to drown in grief but
to ride on it like wave.
