Impact of social issues on Academic Performance of

Senior High School students

Teenagers commonly experience a phase of social issues within their school life and
their academic track, these issues are the reasons why a lot of students struggle to cope up
with their studies and tend to take a downfall as a result. Each individual has their own issue
and has their own way of dealing with it, that’s why we have conducted a survey for us to know
what their thoughts and opinions are regarding this situation. The academic research shows the
struggles and societal problems that most senior high school students (SHS) confront, whether
it’s in physical or virtual mode of learning, and also how they are affected academically and on a
daily basis. We focused our attention to students here in Davao city and chose them to be our
respondents in the said topic, with that said there was a total of 15 people from Colegio de San
Ignacio and numerous numbers of students from multiple schools around the area, and there
was a total of 15 questions as well contained in the survey. We also used the survey to collect
the data of each person’s answer, and our data are both in qualitative and quantitative form of
collection

According to the answers that we got from our respondents through our surveys, they
said that they experience many social issues in school. Some of them are social anxiety
disorder, lack of learning compared to face-to-face class, loss of motivation and slow internet
connection. Most of the respondents are having second thoughts about the new educational
set-up being effective. Also, they said that they encounter these social issues in the last few
days, and it really affects their studies. Furthermore, most of them started experiencing these
social issues at the start of the new online set up. Thus, due to these social issues, many
problems had been birthed out and some of them are having mental/emotional illness. By the
caused of these problems it affected them negatively. It affects their academic performance;
their self-esteem has gotten low and also; they develop speech disorder like stuttering while
doing oral recitations. The lack of motivation that the respondents are experiencing are also
being the cause of them having bad performance not only in school but also on what they
normally do. Moreover, our respondents said that because of these problems it affected their
self-esteem greatly.
Most of the students experience these social issues sometimes. These social issues can
commonly occur because of the isolation being caused by this pandemic. In addition, the
respondents not just said that they are the only one experiencing these, but their peers and
friends as well experience these. Additionally, the respondents said that the students can use
these social issues as motivation towards their education, but it will depend on the person, and
it will be difficult for them. Also, the respondent agrees with us that we can use seeking social
support, lessen screen time, stress relieving routines and time management plan as a way to
prevent and fight theses social issues. Spending time with family and friends can also help as a
breather from the stress being gathered by the continually accumulating homework.

The respondents advised that sharing the happiness and love around family and friends
can help them cope from their lack of motivation. It might not be a necessity, but not taking
strolls or walking around parks and malls with their family and friends can be a catalyst to the
decrease of the student’s motivation. Moreover, the respondents suggest coping mechanisms
like exercising, by giving time to yourself, by talking to God, etc. If the students failed to resolve
these social issues, the respondents said that it will ruin them, and it may affect their current
education. Over and above, the respondent’s goals to focus on their study, keep feeling
motivated and manage their time well to ensure that their studies will remain unaffected
despite the social issues they encountered.

Therefore we conclude that majority of the social issues that the 15 respondents experienced was
at the start of the online setup up until now, a lot of difficulties have occurred since then and these
social issues that our respondents encountered still continues to evolve in this generation and it
should be heard and be taken action, we must be aware and pay attention as it can result to
something worse. As senior high students; let us also encourage one another along with providing
constructive criticism. Since it has been established that this has a significant impact on our
individual lives and how we used to live. Based on the given survey, these are the tough experiences
of all people, especially by our respondents. Society can address social difficulties on its own; yet,
these issues are a roadblock to growth, so we should work together to eliminate them. Social
concerns will continue to increase if we do not unify against them.
