W języku angielskim ze względu na funkcję w zdaniu rozróżniamy przymiotniki

dzierżawcze (possessive adjectives) i zaimki dzierżawcze (possessive pronouns). W
zdaniu przymiotnik określa rzeczownik natomiast zaimek zastępuje rzeczownik. Tak
więc przymiotnik dzierżawczy występuje przed rzeczownikiem, a zaimek dzierżawczy
zamiast rzeczownika. Przykłady:
This is my book. – To jest moja książka. “My” występuje przed rzeczownikiem “book”
spełnia więc funkcję przymiotnika (określającego rzeczownik).
This book is mine. – Ta książka jest moja. ”Mine” występuje na końcu zdania nie ma po
nim rzeczownika, spełnia więc funkcję zaimka (zastępującego rzeczownik).
This isn’t your car. That car is yours.
These aren’t our bikes. They are theirs.
