ROMEO AND JULIET CHARACTERS

Romeo Montague is the male protagonist of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.
The son of Lord Montague and his wife, Lady Montague, he secretly loves and marries Juliet, a
member of the rival House of Capulet, through a priest named Friar Laurence. 

Juliet Capulet is the female protagonist in William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy Romeo and
Juliet. A 13-year-old girl, Juliet is the only daughter of the patriarch of the House of Capulet. She
falls in love with the male protagonist Romeo, a member of the House of Montague, with which
the Capulets have a blood feud. 

Tybalt is a character in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. He is the son of Lady
Capulet's brother, Juliet's short-tempered first cousin, and Romeo's rival. Tybalt shares the same
name as the character Tibert / Tybalt "the prince of cats" in the popular story Reynard the Fox, a
point of mockery in the play.

Mercutio is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's 1597 tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. He is a
close friend to Romeo and a blood relative to Prince Escalus and Count Paris. As such, Mercutio
is one of the named characters in the play with the ability to mingle around those of both houses.

Friar Laurence or Friar Lawrence is a character in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and


Juliet. Friar Laurence is a friar who plays the part of a wise adviser to Romeo and Juliet, along
with aiding in major plot developments.

Benvolio is a fictional character in Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet. He is Lord


Montague's nephew and Romeo's cousin. Benvolio serves as an unsuccessful peacemaker in the
play, attempting to prevent violence between the Capulet and Montague families.

Lord Capulet is the husband of Lady Capulet and the father of Juliet. He is the head of the
Capulet family and has an on-going feud with the head of another family, Lord Montague.

Count Paris or County Paris is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
He is a suitor of Juliet. He is handsome, wealthy, and a kinsman to Prince Escalus. His name
comes from the Prince of Troy, Paris, in Homer's Illiad.

The Nurse is a major character in William Shakespeare's classic drama Romeo and Juliet. She is
the personal servant, guardian of Juliet Capulet, and has been since Juliet was born. She had a
daughter named Susan who died in infancy, and then became wetnurse to Juliet. 

Rosaline is a fictional character mentioned in William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
She is the niece of Lord Capulet.

Lady Capulet was Capulet's wife is the matriarch of the house of Capulet and Juliet's mother.
She plays a larger role than Montague's wife, appearing in several scenes.

Prince Escalus is a character in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. He is the Prince of
Verona. He holds authority over the Montague and Capulet families who are feuding. He first
punishes Capulet and Montague for the quarrel between Tybalt, Benvolio, and a handful of
servants.

Friar John is sent by Friar Laurence to Mantua, with letters informing Romeo that Juliet is not in
