Lesson
Characteristics of Music of
1 the Lowlands of Luzon

The Lowlands of Luzon cover the regions of NCR, III, and IV. The provinces are
Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Pampanga, and Pangasinan. Since these provinces are
located in the lowland areas, the places are considered for farming and fishing. This
means that the livelihood is shown in their music.

The people of the Lowlands of Luzon express their feelings towards each other
and the environment, their history, and their religious beliefs through voice and musical
instruments. A group performance inspired by the Lowlands’ musical examples will
culminate the educational experience. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish and
other Western influences.

Physical Fitness
3 Assessments
Everyone wants to live longer. There are ample ways across cultures and
traditions and there are hundreds of researches and studies that show how to
achieve life longevity. Among these “solutions”, the best way is simply fit and be well.
By being physically fit, an individual will be able to perform the task effectively and
efficiently.
In your previous grade level, you were taught to participate in various physical
activities. Through those activities, you can move more and be physically well.
However, being physically fit is a constant process. It is advised to plan and organize
physical activities to promote lifelong fitness. This module will help you define
physical fitness and its components which are essential in creating your fitness
program.

What is It

What is Physical Activity and Physical Fitness? Physical activity refers to any bodily
movement produced by skeletal muscles which results in energy expenditure. On the other
hand, physical fitness is the body’s condition to effectively perform daily tasks without undue
fatigue and still has the energy to enjoy other active recreational activities. It is a broad term
coined to health and wellness which is used to describe someone who can perform activities
effectively and efficiently.

What are the components of physical fitness? Physical fitness components are
divided into two; health-related fitness components and skill-related fitness components. These
components are essential in preventing non-communicable diseases and injuries.

Table 1. Health-Related Fitness Components

Components Definitions
Body composition It refers to the proportion of body fat and lean body mass.
Cardiorespiratory Your heart, lungs, and blood vessels can adapt to physical exertion
endurance for a long period. Cardio means heart; respiratory is the system in
charge of breathing and diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide to the
body.
Muscular strength The muscle groups can exert the greatest force in one repetition
maximum.
Muscular endurance The muscle groups can maintain the contraction for a prolonged
duration without fatigue.
Flexibility The muscle groups can go through a full range of motion without
pain.

Table 2. Skill-Related Fitness Components

Components Definitions
Speed It is the ability to perform a specific task in a short period.
Power It refers to the ability to perform one explosive movement in a given period.

20
Agility It is the ability to change direction from one point to another.
Balance It relates to the ability to maintain equilibrium while stationary or moving.
Reaction Time It relates to the time elapsed between stimulation and the beginning of the
reaction to it.
Coordination It is the ability to use the senses, such as sight and hearing, together with
body parts in performing motor tasks accurately.
Below are the interpretations of results for the Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Take note
that the test is NOT a measure of who did well and who didn’t; it is a summary of
your fitness status. Interpret as honest as possible.

The Concepts of Holistic Health
4
Being healthy is one of the highest attainable standards and fundamental
rights of every human being without differences of race, religion, belief, and social
status. However, as one gets through the process of growth and development, many
health concerns need to be addressed. Thus, understanding the basic concepts of
holistic health on attaining a balanced approach to healing the mind, body, and spirit
is fundamental to one’s overall well-being.

What’s In

This lesson will introduce you to the key concept of holistic health. As you go
over on the different discussions and activities in this lesson, it will help you deepen
your understanding of the physical, mental/intellectual, emotional, social, and
moral-spiritual dimensions of holistic health. Also, it will provide you some questions
to ponder upon and reveal your understanding as you analyze the relationship of the
different health dimensions in developing holistic health.

3
What’s New

Health Defined
Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-
being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (World Health
Organization). Moreover, it is said to be one’s essential possession and fundamental
to human happiness and well-being. The holistic concept of health recognizes the
influence of the social, economic, psychological, and environmental well-being of a
person.

Activity 1.1 Like or Unlike

Directions: The following are statements related to holistic health. Put a checkmark
if the statement relates to the holistically healthy person and cross mark if the
statement is not.
1. Eating nutritious food.
2. Planting vegetables at home.
3. Reading educational books.
4. Taking care of the body with exercise and physical activity.
5. Getting easily irritated that affects emotions.
6. Enjoying a chosen career.
7. Having an enriching relationship with others.
8. Talking negatively to self and other people.
9. Being honest all the time in dealing with people.
10. Minimizing stress, relaxing more, and enjoying life.

What is It

After assessing your previous knowledge about the definition and different
dimensions of health, let us now concentrates on each essential element or
dimension of a holistically healthy individual.
The term “Holistic” is originated from the word ‘whole,’ which means
completeness to health and well-being. Holistic health is defined as an overall
combination of the physical, mental, emotional, social, moral-spiritual, and
environmental aspects of a person’s total well-being. For many years, studies suggest
that an individual is a “whole” being and made up of interdependent parts. Therefore,

4
if one part is functioning at its best, the impact can affect all parts of a person, that
the mind, body, spirit, and emotions are integrated and inseparable.
Holistic health can be classified according to six (6) dimensions. These include
physical, mental, emotional, social, moral-spiritual, and environmental health.
Physical health refers to the physical or bodily aspect of health. This focuses more
on the collective definition of health as the absence of disease or illness. Maintaining
a good and sound body can be achieved through proper nutrition, complete sleep,
and a consistent well-rounded exercise.
Mental health refers to the cognitive aspect of health. It focuses on a person’s ability
to think, solve problems, recall information, and other mental processes. With a
healthy mind, one develops the capability to have a positive outlook, openness to
new ideas, and experiences that enable improvement in one’s life, family, and
environment. Furthermore, an intellectually healthy person can cope with normal
stressors, able to work productively and contribute to the improvement of the
community. Reading books, proper exercise, and meditation are some ways to helps
improve brain functioning in attaining mental wellness.
Emotional Health refers to a person’s mood and emotional state. It is closely related
to mental health; however, emotional health focuses more on the ability to recognize
and express one’s thoughts, feelings, emotions, and maintain a realistic perspective
on different life situations. Facing life problems, stress, and pressures positively,
building strong communication with friends, families and other significant adults are
things to consider in maintaining one’s emotional sanity.
Social Health refers to one’s ability to make and maintain meaningful relationships
with others. Good social health includes relating, interacting, communicating well
with others, and having rich connections with people, including family, friends, social
networks, and community.
Moral-Spiritual Health refers to one’s sense of overall purpose in life found through
a person’s values, beliefs, and faith. Spiritual wellness helps in maintaining a proper
perspective to overcome challenges in life as it brings harmony, focus, direction, and
balance to life. Spending time in worship, prayer, scripture, reflection, and
meditation are ways to improve social health.
Environmental Health refers to the interrelationships between an individual and
its environment. In simple terms, environmental wellness is about respecting nature
and your surroundings and in gaining personal fulfillment from the environment. In
general, it promotes human health and well-being and fosters healthy and safe
communities. Planting trees, creating home gardens, proper segregation, and
disposal of garbage are some examples of maintaining a healthy and clean
environment.
In general, the integration of the six health components influence, balance,
and create overall wellness. Each dimension plays an important part in a lifestyle
pie; without one piece, there is a missing link that imbalances the remainder of the
other dimensions.

Activity 1.2 My WHEELness

Your well-being is like a wheel, it represents your life and each section
represents one dimension of your health. The more balance each wedge, the better
the wheel functions. However, if it’s not, the wheel becomes dysfunctional. This
activity will analyze your well-being by rating each component.
a. Fill into the area that best describes your current level of health.
b. Shade the smallest ring with color “red” if you find yourself ‘low” in a specific
dimension, color “yellow” the middle ring if it is “average” and color the outer ring
with “green” if it is “high”.

After rating yourself, assess your well-being, and answer the following process
questions.

• If your wheel is more it's like a functioning wheel, the more you're thriving
• But, if it looks like a broken wheel or flat tire, it means that you need to exert
more effort and strive for achieving holistic health.
