1. Company Background

• As for information, Sime Darby Plantation was chosen because it is very suitable industry
to gain new experience in our course.
• Sime Darby Plantation trace its roots to as early as the 19th Century, when pioneering
English planters established rubber plantations in Malaya.
• Among those pioneers were Alexander Guthrie, Daniel & Smith Harrison, Joseph
Crosfield, Willliam Sime and Henry d'Esterre & Herbert Mitford Darby - founders of three
great companies (Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad, Golden Hope Plantations Berhad and Sime
Darby Berhad) which merged in 2007 to become the Sime Darby Group. The background
of the Sime Darby is show on below:

1910 – William Middleton Sime, Henry d’ Esterre Darby, and Herbert Mildford Darby
founded Sime, Darby & Co., Ltd. In Melaka.

1916 – Sime Darby & Co becomes agent and secretary for five rubber plantations with a
total of 12,437 acres. Sime, Darby 7 Co. diversified into timber, preservatives and motor
insurance.

1920 – Guthrie & Co acquired property at Mengkibol, Johor that had been planted with
Elaies guinaeensis, the African oil palm. Established the first hydraulic press system at the
factory.

2007- The newly joined Sime Darby, Guthrie and Golden Hope re-entered the Kuala Lumpur
Stock Exchange under the name of Sime Darby with a market capitalisation of RM 59.5
billion- nearly 80% more than its original Rm31.6 billion at the start of the manager process.

2017 – Sime Darby Plantation is listed on Bursa Malaysia on 31 November 2017 after the
demerger from the holding company, Sime Darby Berhad.
2. Process involved to produce the final product. (details of process involving of reaction,
process flow, parameter involved, major equipment used)

• In the milling process, fresh palm fruits was went through the FFB Ramp and Grading
Process. There is 7 different type of fresh palm bunch were graded which are Unripe
Bunch, Under-ripe Bunch, Over-ripe Bunch, Empty Bunch, Long Stalk, Ripe Bunch and
also Rotten Bunch.
• The palm fruit bunch that industry, Sime Darby Plantation, wanted to process to further
process is Ripe Bunch because it has >5 loose fruits detached and also >95%.
• This type of palm fruit bunch also produces a lot of oil than others. Tenera palm fruits
types are considered as the best palms bunch because each fruit produces a large
quantity of oil (which is in the mesocarp, the yellow 'flesh').
• Tenera palm fruits was produces by hybrid tree species (Dura and Pisifera). After fruit
bunches was graded, it was gone through to the Sterilization Station which used oblique
sterilizer, the steam pressure that used in this process is >35 psi and 30 minutes was
holding up to make sure the bunch ripens quickly.
• The function of the sterilizing process is to loosen the fruitlets, to stop enzymatic FFA
rise, to dehydrate the fruit, to soften the mesocarp, as well as to dehydrate the nut.
• After that process, the process was continued to the Threshing Station. This process
function is to detach and separate the fruitlets.
• The quality control to Unstripped bunches: < 5%. Moreover, this palm fruits went to
Pressing Station which used a digester to extract the maximum oil content in the fruits
and to process the press cake.
• Lastly, the final process, Clarification Station, it is to recover oil from the diluted crude oil
by static settling and also to recover oil from the sludge by Decanter separation.
• The clarifying process includes purifying, oil recovery, sludge decanter, vacuum drier and
CPO Tank. Kernel Recovery Station also was also done to gain their main products. It is
including crack the nuts, separate the shell from kernel through wet separation and
store dry kernel for sales.
• The main product of the Sime Darby Plantation from milling process are crude palm oil
(CPO) and palm kernels oil (PKO).
• In the laboratory, the instruments used in quality control testing the final products such
as impurities testing, jar test, FFA testing, DOBI and moisture analysis.
3. Quality control analysis to meet specification of final product.

The main product of the Sime Darby Plantation from milling process are crude palm oil
(CPO) and palm kernels oil (PKO). In the laboratory, the instruments used in quality control
testing the final products such as impurities testing, FFA testing, DOBI and moisture analysis.

4. Quality assurance to ensure a high level of quality in production during the

development of products or services.
The quality policy statement of this industry is Sime Darby Plantation Berhad (SDPB) aims to
be a leading integrated producer and supplier of certified sustainable palm oil. In pursuing
their sustainability goals that are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals (UNSDG) 2030. They also are fully committed to delivering quality. Sime Darby
Plantation strive for excellent and pledge to offer products and services that exceed
standard quality requirements.

Furthermore, the quality assurance of the Sime Darby Plantation includes quality
management standard is a detail of requirements, specifications, guidelines and
characteristics that products, services and processes should consistently meet in order to
ensure their quality matches expectations. Standards are an essential element of quality
management systems. There are five types of ISO that related to oil and fat industry which
is:

• ISO 9000 - a set of international standards on quality management and quality

assurance developed to help companies effectively document the quality system
elements needed to maintain an efficient quality system
• ISO 14000 - a series of environmental management standards
• ISO 17025 - Testing and calibration laboratories
• ISO 18000 – Health and safety management system
• ISO 22000 – Food Safety Management System

But the ISO regarding the quality management system is ISO 9000 which is a set of
international standards on quality management and quality assurances and it was develop
to help companies effectively document the quality system elements needed to maintain an
efficient quality system. But they are not specific to any one industry and can be applied to
organizations of any size. ISO 9000 can help a company to satisfy its customer, meet
regulatory requirements and can achieve continual improvement. The ISO 9000 family
contains these standards which is:

• ISO 9001:2015 Quality Managements Systems – state the requirements for

management system
• ISO 9000:2015 Quality Management Systems - describe the Fundamentals and
Vocabulary (definitions) of quality management.
• ISO 9004:2018 Quality Management – gives guidelines for enhancing the Quality of
an Organization. This guidance to Achieve Sustained Success (continuous
improvement) of organization.

5. Purpose of research and development (R&D) to innovate and introduce new products
and services. How to meet the supplier/customer demands?

• After milling, various palm oil products are made using refining processes (further
process)
• First is fractionation, with crystallization and separation processes to obtain solid
(palm stearin), and liquid (olein) fractions.
• Then melting and degumming removes impurities. Then the oil is filtered and
bleached. Physical refining removes smells and coloration to produce "refined,
bleached and deodorized palm oil" (RBDPO) and free fatty acids, which are used in
the manufacture of soaps, washing powder and other products.
• RBDPO is the basic palm oil product sold on the world's commodity markets. Many
companies fractionate it further to produce palm oil for cooking oil, or process it into
other products.
• Interesterification, hydrogenation, glycerolysis and distillation is example of process
involves in R&D process.
• RBD palm oil, RBD palm olein, RBD palm stearin, palm mid fraction and palm fatty
acid distillate (PFAD) is the product of R&D process.

6. Elements of safety practiced.

There are 8 principles for growers to be RSPO certified:

• Commitment to transparency
• Compliance with applicable laws and regulations
• Commitment to long-term economic and financial viability
• Use of appropriate best practices by growers and millers
• Environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity
• Responsible consideration of employees, and of individuals and communities
affected by growers and mills
• Responsible development of new plantings
• Commitment to continuous improvement in key areas of activity
