INTRODUCTION

Butter is a milk product made from the fat and protein components of milk or cream. It is
a semi-solid emulsion at room temperature, consisting of approximately 80% butterfat. It is
used as a spread at room temperature, melted as a condiment, and used as an ingredient in
baking, sauce making, pan frying and other cooking procedures.

A lot of us thought that butter is the same as margarine because of its similar look and
function, but butter is not the same as margarine, be it the way it is manufactured, the
ingredients, the taste and everything else. Butter is derived from animal fat, which is typically
milk fat, while margarine is derived from vegetable oil and fat, which makes margarine free
from dairy products. Vegetarians and vegans consume margarine as a substitute to butter.
Made in a traditional manner, Golden Churn is a quality butter preserved only with the
addition of salt. With a rich creamy taste, Golden Churn canned butter can be stored for 18
months without the need for refrigeration and is ideal for cooking and baking.

The issue of halal butter special golden churn was the talk of people saying that butter
buying gold churn sold in Malaysia is not halal. This issue was known by the Sarawak
Islamic Council on 28 July 2011 and confirmed that it is not halal throughout Sarawak, but
JAKIM on 15 August 2011 confirmed that the gold churn creamy butter products sold
throughout Malaysia are not halal.

This was confirmed by a representative of Ballantyn Food of New Zealand who

produced the product. Muslims in the country are asked not to use the product in this regard.
JAKIM analysed on 19 July 2011 and showed that deoxyribonucleic acid, which is
deoxybonucleic acid-pig DNA, was confirmed by JKM detected in the product. This decision
was taken after finding that the products involved came from the same factory, although they
were imported by different parties and also distributed using this product, the results were
informed to the company at a meeting on 9 August 2011 and Ballantyn Foods PTY Ltd
agreed to withdraw the products from the market.

1
BACKGROUND OF STUDY

This case happen in 2011 when the Halal certification logo on the Golden Churn
Creamery Butter product will be withdrawn that has been confirmed to be non-halal product.
Golden Churn butter is a fine butter made by Ballantyne Foods Pty. Ltd., Australia and
Australia have been proudly on the market for more than 70 years. Ballantyne Company is
regarded as the world's largest producer of canned butter and has entered markets in Asia, the
Pacific, the Middle East and the Americas.

For more than 120 years, the purity, flavor and consistency of Golden Churn butter has
made it a favorite among leading specialist bakers, chefs and home cooks. Combining a long
shelf life with excellent baking and cooking properties, Golden Churn canned butter has
gained a reputation as a premium commodity on the Middle East and Asian markets, while
Golden Churn canned butter, tubs and portions are quickly becoming the favorites
everywhere they are served.

Golden Churn Butter from New Zealand comes in a number of packages which are
frozen, wrapped, tubs and part tubes. Golden Churn Butter in a can come from New Zealand.
In Sarawak, the Golden Churn Butter is the main ingredient of the state's popular delicacy,
the Sarawak layered cakes. It is also commonly used in many other recipes. The company
expressed its gratitude to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia Jakim, the Johor
Religious Department and the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department for the successful
verification of the Ballantyne Foods Pty Ltd New Zealand project.

The inspection verified that the Golden Churn canned butter meets Malaysian Halal
standards as per the Halal Certificate provided by NZ Islamic Processed Food Management, a
body approved by Jakim. With the successful verification process, Golden Churn canned
butter is now available in the halal section of all Malaysian food retailers. The verification
process was carried out after the state religious authorities had declared the butter to be non-
halal after it had been found to have allegedly contained pig DNA.

2
METHODOLOGY

Flashback to a problem that may have been bigger in East Malaysia over 5 years ago, but
did not send as many shockwaves over here on the western peninsula. The problem first came
up in April 2011 when a memo was circulated within its departments by the Johor State
Religious Department (JAJ) to inform them of the findings of swine DNA in Golden Churn
Pure Creamery Butter products.

This was followed in March by the findings of swine DNA at Kluang Rail Coffee, where
they were claimed to have used Golden Churn Pure Creamery Butter to fry coffee beans,
leading to the findings of coffee swine DNA.
In August 2011, JAKIM finally reported that despite the company manufacturing it
contesting these allegations, the Golden Churn Creamery Butter was certified as Haram
because it contained traces of swine DNA. JAKIM then took down the Halal logo and it is
now legally recognised as off limits to Muslims. On social media, the long fight between both
sides should have been made louder, but it seems like this was another topic that was just not
found 'viral-worthy' enough.
Golden Churn Creamery Butter products manufactured by Ballantyne Foods Pty Ltd
have Halal Certification from the Victoria Islamic Coordinating Council (ICCV). The holder
of the Halal Certificate of the New Zealand Islamic Development Trust (NZIDT) and the
Ulema Council of Indonesia is the Golden Churn Creamery Butter label, developed by New
Zealand Butter Canners Morrinsville (MUI). To your awareness, these three halal
certification bodies are acknowledged by JAKIM.

To your awareness, these three halal certification bodies are acknowledged by JAKIM.
As a consequence, after the brand became contagious and became the talk of Muslim
customers, JAKIM carried out an inspection. The Malaysian Department of Islamic
Development (Jakim) would like to refer to the newspaper headline on the Golden Churn
Butter halal status issue.

First of all, JAKIM would like to emphasize that the problem of misunderstanding over
status disparities between halal Golden Churn Butter products between JAKIM and the

3
Islamic Religious Department of Sarawak (JAIS) did not actually occur because samples
from different importers were involved in the tests carried out by JAKIM on the products.

Several factors, such as the batch number of product production taken, packaging,
sampling location and other factors that may occur during the manufacture of the product,
need to be taken into account when conducting swine DNA content testing on a product. In
the meantime, consideration should also be given to potential causes of contamination at
some levels.

JAKIM would therefore like to advise that both JAKIM and JAIS samples are taken from
separate batch numbers and packaging, including import variations and locations of
sampling. Although there are two different views in this regard, because of the factors listed,
Jakim does not contradict the discovery of swine DNA in the product sample taken by the
Islamic Religious Department of Sarawak and Muslims in Sarawak should comply with the
decision of the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department.

Now, Golden Churn Butter Creamery's products are halal. The products can be bought
and consumed by Muslim customers. In order to ensure their validity, certain problems have
also been corrected by the authorities.

4
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Golden Chrun Butter product that produced from Ballantyne Foods Pty (NZ) Limited
was issued that contains pork DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). It has been issue to Muslim
consumer especially because they often use this product to make a cake or biscuit. This thing
already confirmed from JAKIM that the product is not Halal and it is import from different
company and party.

Based on the issue of this product, there have a short-term solution for consumer and
also product’s holder. For those who already use the product especially for their business
such as produce a cake, they need to do some process so there no issues arise. A consumer
needs to replace the product with other product that already verified Halal from JAKIM and
use it as ingredient in their food.

Moreover, they also should show the new receipt from purchasing new ingredient for
their uses. Those processed are more referring to Muslim entrepreneurs that had use the
product before. They also need to do a tanning process and need to get approved from State
Islamic Religious Department and need get proof of tanning certificate from them. This will
be proof that they really do the tanning process against their product.

Besides, the other solution is they can state information about Halal at their product
and the Halal certificate must be confirmed from JAKIM. This help to ensure the interests of
Muslim are protected and it also for take a precautions from any issue arise. Therefore, they
suggest to consumer in order to prioritize the product that have a Halal certificate that already
approved by JAKIM.

From this solution process, it helps the consumer and product’s holder to solve their
small issues. This step we can do when we were in trouble from product that not verified
Halal or product that had been issues from not Halal even though it is Halal and verified from
overseas. Muslim consumer especially needs to take precautions about this thing, so that they
can distinguish between fake Halal logo and the real Halal logo.

5
For this issue, there also needs for long-term solution to prevent any issue about Halal
laws. Food labelling is one of way to solve the problem especially for the future. This food
labels help consumers to choose a good food for them, for example choosing Halal food.
Food labels also carry useful information and if the food contains non-halal ingredients,
Muslim consumer can avoid by not purchasing it. The entrepreneur that produce a product
need to be aware with important of food labelling. For example, Muslim consumer get
confuse because there is no information at the product, so they do not know either its Halal or
non-Halal.

Other than that, as we can see nowadays many entrepreneur that want to produce a
food product but lack of information about Halal Legislation. This is the important for the
other to know about Halal law, so that we can prevent and issue arise and fake Halal logo and
certificate. As we know, all the products need a confirmation from JAKIM to get Halal
certificate, even though that they use Halal ingredients. There many cases that entrepreneur
failed to get Halal certificate and make a fake Halal logo because they lacks of information.

Furthermore, as we know JAKIM and Halal Development Corporation is responsible

to the Halal industry. Monitoring aspects of Halal certification and enforcement is important
especially for import products. This is because of Malaysia also received an import products
from other countries such as New Zealand, Thailand and Indonesia. They need to confirm the
product and the enforcement is truly Halal even though at the company that import the
product already verified Halal. JAKIM should take it responsible to make sure that company
that produced the food product does not change the ingredients.

The Golden Churn Butter that produce by Ballantyne Food PTY (NZ) company, it
actually Halal because already had a Halal certificate from New Zealand Islamic
Development Trust (NZIDT) and Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI). After an issue arise about
the products contain pork DNA, JAKIM test the sample to the product is involves samples
from different importers. From this issue the company should be fined or sued because for the
offense that their company made. It is because underestimating the importance of halal
certificates.

6
CONCLUSION

As far the conclusion is concerned, golden churn creamy butter declared that they has
been declared halal after a contamination was found to have been limited samples taken from
batched from Johor. The alleged contamination with porcine DNA was discovered by the
Johor Religious Department in April.

The status of the golden churn creamy butter product is halal because it is manufactured
by New Zealand Butter Canners Morrinsville and holds the Halal Certificate of the New
Zealand Islamic Development Trust (NZIDT) and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). The
three halal certification bodies are approved by JAKIM for your information. We therefore
advise consumers to give attention to products that have a Malaysian Halal Certificate or
Logo, or an Overseas Halal Logo known by JAKIM.

It is important to understand that every butter delivery from Australia and New Zealand
carries mandatory quality standards from the relevant Government Food Authorities,
including Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), the Australian Quarantine and
Inspection Service (AQIS) and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA), in addition
to strict Halal certification requirements. We confirm that our Golden Churn butter meets the
requirements of these authorities.

As a smart, caring user, first carefully label the product label and identify the halal
logo that appears. You can visit the halal directory at www.halal.gov.my or the myJakim
smartphone application to find out the halal logo accepted abroad by JAKIM.
