WRITING TASK 1:

The line graph given illustrates the percentages of car owners in Britain between 1971
and 2007.

Overall, while the number of car owners with one car was the highest, the opposite was
true for that with three or more cars.

In 1971, 50% of British households did not have a car, and the proportion of people
without a car dropped significantly from 45% to 35% during the 32 year period. By contrast,
before remaining stable at 10%, the percentage of owners with two cars increased slowly
between 7% and 9% (1971-1975). There was a considerable rise of about 15% from 1979 to
2007.

While the one-car household became the most common type in Britain at about 45% in
the late 1970s, the percentage of people with three or more cars was not typical in this country
(only 1%) at the same time. As for the one-car owners, there was a marginal fluctuation from
1971 to 2007. In terms of the figure for people with three or more cars, it increased to 7% in
2007.

WRITING TASK 2

These days, negative news such as problems and emergencies is posted regularly on the
media rather than positive news. While it is thought that this trend has a detrimental effect on
each person and society, I believe that there are some advantages to updating social problems.

On the one hand, negative articles or reports can have adverse influences on the public.
Firstly, this kind of news affects mental health with symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
When you read about plenty of negative situations such as serial killing and kidnapping, you will
feel that society is scary which will influence your thinking. Therefore, you are likely to lose
your sense of security, this feeling can trigger difficulty in making a relationship, especially at
work. Secondly, in addition to increasing anxiety and depression, spending a great deal of time
on social media to focus on problems and emergencies can lead to poor sleep. There is much
negative news to receive a lot of publicity from misleading sources. People tend to be curious
about this news or are not able to go to sleep and stay up all night to keep an eye on the situation.
This case will eventually lead to a lack of sleep and make each person less alert to work and
study in the next morning.

On the other hand, there are many advantages from the negative news. The first benefit is
that this kind of information can become an announcement to citizens in the event of robberies or
accidents occuring suddenly. Therefore, if the criminals are running from the law, people in the
community can identify them through posted information and help the police team find/ locate
these criminals faster. Moreover, through the pressing problems in social media, governments,
and dignitaries can take reasonable action, figure out feasible and timely measures to deal with/
tackle the serious problem. Society and countries would have serious consequences if negative
information was hidden and not made public.

In conclusion, although undesirable news can affect individuals’ thinking and emotion
negatively, there are several advantages for making life safe.
