Complaint/ 1. Installation and commissioning of 2 pcs KN3-923 (retrofit of 2x KN923.1)

Purpose of visit :
Work done:

Preparation:
arranging flights, gathering drawings/tools, perform administration

Tuesday 29 Jan.:
 Travel: office → Amsterdam Airport → Frankfurt Airport → Linz Airport → Vessel
 After arrival checked situation on board. ECR: 2pcs KN923.1 for PS/SB engines. Both “standard”
connected, except for contact 295-295: nothing connected. Tachogenerator used: GZ121-B.
 Both systems had extra switch to open/close wire to the shutdown solenoid for de-energizing when
engine not running and autostop contact L.O. Press is activated (no inhibits)
 Turned off power of both systems and disconnected/removed Starboard KN923.1 system.
 Removed the extra solenoid interruption switch and then installed new KN3-923 system.
(FA.-No. B88159 #2, SN: B84093-13). Connected signals until dinner time.

Wednesday 30 Jan.:
 Connected rest of the signals to Starboard system then started. Found several wire break alarms
activated: installed 22k resistors. Checked the outputs to the alarm system: only 676/677 seem to
have no effect. Will check later. Found “insulation” led turn yellow when Bridge Em.Stop and/or Reset-
Override is connected. For now disconnected, will check later.
 Wired 295-295 to firing speed relay so that contact will close as soon as engine is actually running.
 Checked Emergency Stops EM1-EM4 plus Local switch: solenoid outputs activated → OK.
 Disconnected and removed Portside KN923.1 system. Removed the solenoid interruption switch.

Service-no.: 19NBLX-S004 Page: 2 of 2

 Installed resistors, connected 295-295 to firing speed relay and connected wire bridge at 136a-136a
all same as SB system. Then mounted new unit (FA.-No.: B88159 #1, SN: B77269-2) and connected all.
 Checked Emergency Stops EM1-EM4 plus Local : solenoid outputs activated → OK.
 Started Portside engine and checked firing speed relays to activate → OK.
 Checked running hour counter and AMS activation → OK
 Created SHD by Emergency Stop pushbutton of N3000-SAP: solenoid output activated but engine do
not stop. After some tests concluded that new NORIS system is OK but problem is solenoid related.
Crew cleaned mechanics around solenoid and then tested again → OK. Same for SB engine.
 Started PS engine and created SHD by emergency stop pushbutton N3000-SAP → OK
 Started engine and created SHD simulating Bridge emergency stop pushbutton → OK
 Started engine and created SHD by AS2 (= Lub.Oil Pressure Low) → OK
 Started engine and created SHD by AS2 with override activated: no shutdown. Then removed the
override: shutdown activates → OK
 Started engine and created SHD by AS3 & AS4 → OK
 Then started STB engine and perform same tests as described above: same results → OK.

Thursday 31 Jan.:
 Was informed by crew that nominal speed of engines is 1000 RPM despite earlier information about
900 RPM. Therefore changed setting of speed switches to F 6.
 Performed overspeed test at both engines: found shutdown at approx. 850 RPM → OK. Also alarm
overspeed on Alarm Panel functioning.
 Although engine was stopped, several Lub.Oil Alarms remained activated on AMS while according crew
this was not situation before. Found incorrect wiring in firing speed contact, changed wiring → OK.
 Checked insulation problem on SB panel: led turn yellow when ES1 (bridge emerg.stop) at 267-277 or
Override/Reset at 136-136 is connected. Normally led is red blinking when earthfault. Tested by
making 0Ω short to ground at some terminals → OK, led indeed start blinking red
 Measured resistance to ground with Fluke and later with 50V megger device. all wires >25MΩ. When
measured to each other by fluke it show infinity, by megger: >1GΩ.
 Disconnected all other wires (tacho, AS sensors, stopvalve etc) and connected only ES1: led insulation
turning yellow, same when connecting only override/reset.
 Connected all and swapped PS and SB N3000-SAP with each other: problem remain at SB system.
Noticed when SAP unit is isolated from ground the led insulation remain green, which is OK as the
measurement is not functioning when SAP housing not connected to ground. Installed all original again.
 By long cable, connected wires from SB side to PS system: now led insulation of PS system showing
yellow. When wires from PS are connected to SB system the SB led remain green. So the problem is
related to the cables/wiring of respective functions, which both happen to be signals from/to bridge.

Friday 29 Jan.:
 Travel: vessel → Linz Airport → Frankfurt Airport → Amsterdam Airport → Office
