Learning Journal – ENGL0101

Unit 1
For this Unit's Learning Journal, you will write a small two or three sentence
paragraph on your expectations for this course. If you are stuck on what to say, just
ask yourself the question, ‘What would I teach in this course if I were instructor?’
English always seemed so fundamental to learn for me because it enables us to
open up new opportunities and adventures that make us blossom, no matter the place
in the world we encounter ourselves. During this course, I hope to be able to strengthen
my English knowledge, especially of academic and formal writing, and to expand my
vocabulary to get even more fluent when expressing my ideas in a solid, coherent, and
cohesive way. Also, as writing is an enjoyable task for me, I want to improve and polish
my grammar skills to excel at it.

Unit 2
For this Unit's Learning Journal, you will write a two or three sentence paragraph
on how you used Mind Mapping to select your Topic for the essay project you will
work on throughout the course. Let your mind go and explore what topic you want to
write about for the next few weeks. Each week we will add information to your draft
essay. This week you only need to select a topic. If you want, you can also add a
picture of your Mind Map, but that step is optional.
As writing is a task that I sincerely enjoy, I started pondering about the themes that
I’m most passionate about. From love and the moon to medicine and health, I thought
that it would be very valuable if I chose to express one of my constant concern through
my words for someone else to read, so I let my mind ran through those ideas.
Therefore, I finally decided to write about the essential role of public health in our
communities, as an inalienable responsibility of each citizen of the world and the
key to the development of our society.

Unit 3
For this Unit's Learning Journal, you will use the topic you selected for Unit 2 to
draft your thesis statement and create the outline of your five-paragraph essay.
For your thesis, you will include at least two or three sentences that make your thesis.
You will use a three-section academic outline format to present your thesis statement
and the topic sentences for three paragraphs in the body section. For now, leave the
conclusion section blank.
 Note: The thesis must be your own original ideas and thoughts, avoid using ideas
from other sources.
Public Health Is a Nonnegotiable Responsibility
Draft Thesis Statement:
Public health is an inalienable individual and collective responsibility of each citizen
of the world. It is key to the development of our society. It aims to promote and protect
not only physical health but mental and social wellness as well. Also, it has been the
focal point to enhance the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Academic Outline:
I. Thesis
A. Public health is an inalienable individual and collective responsibility of each citizen
of the world because it is key to the development of our society as it aims to promote
and protect not only physical health but mental and social wellness as well, and has
been the focal point to enhance the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

B. Public health aims to promote and protect physical, mental, and social wellness.
C. Public health has been the most important tool to enhance the global response to the
COVID-19 pandemic.
III. Conclusion

Unit 4
For this Unit's Learning Journal, you will write a two or three sentence assessment
of your own progress and a note to your instructor (5 sentences or less) about your
assessment and how can he help you improve, and/or the plan you have for yourself to
improve. Proofread for grammar and usage before submitting.

Unit 5
An abstract is a presentation of any student or researcher's work, so it must contain
a helpful summary of the author's position, point of view, findings, and methods. A well-
written abstract is a tool to introduce your ideas to the audience and give the reader a
complete image of what will encounter within, meaning it is the crucial point on whether
people will be interested, or not, in reviewing your work. On the other hand, reading the
abstract of an author's article can save us a lot of time when we do research, making it
more efficient, relevant, and valuable whenever we look for accurate information to
support our ideas.

Unit 6
For this Unit's Learning Journal, you will research and identify three peer-
reviewed sources for information to add to the essay draft you submitted in Unit
4. Then, for each source, submit the full reference information (formatted using APA
Reference section style) followed by at least one quote or paraphrase that you wish
to use for your essay formatted using APA in-text citation style.
Thesis Statement: You Cannot Give Up Public Health

Public health is an inalienable individual and collective responsibility of each citizen of

the world because it aims to promote and protect not only physical health but mental and social

wellness as well, it is key to the development of our society and has been the focal point to

enhance the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peer-reviewed articles information

“Decisions for pandemic control measures are made under difficult circumstances driven

by urgency and panic, with uncertainties and complexities for public goods over individual

rights. Global solidarity in controlling the pandemic is being tested” (Alhaji, 2021, para. 1).

“The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the world's interconnectedness and

interdependence and has exerted pressure on world leaders, policy-makers, and public health

authorities to make ethically challenging decisions on public health containment measures”

(Alhaji, 2021, para. 2).

Decision-making in public health must be evidence-based from rigorous research to

guarantee their benefits stand out more than the burden these may represent, and the global
evidence has demonstrated that rigorous and adequately implemented social policies have

slowed the COVID-19 transmission (Enria et al., 2021).

“Policymakers must promote the development of public health education and human

resources. As a feature of the political environment, public opinion is essential for policy-

making” (Shen et al., 2021, para. 1).
