Lesson
3 Active and Passive Voices

In every sentence, you need to identify the verb whether it is in the

active or passive voice. When the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the
sentence is said to be in the active voice. When the subject receives the action
of the verb, the sentence is said to be in the passive voice.

What’s In

Look closely at the given sentences. Notice that they follow the given pattern
in forming active and passive sentences.

Subject + verb + object Object + verb + subject

What’s New

Which of these two paragraphs you find it more comprehensive and

commonly used in writing.? Why?

Paragraph A. Active sentences

When Boredom Strikes

Why can’t I see my friends anymore? Why can’t I see them in person?
I freaked out one day. I have watched almost all the movies in Netflix.
I’ve almost done reading my 580 pages book. I have done a lot of errands at
home. I had tidied up the rummage in my room. I already did my laundry. I
have given my pet dog a bath and a smooth spray.
Just then, I heard my mom started the engine. She was about to go
out for groceries when the idea of coming with her came up. I’m full of
excitement to think that finally I will get to check what is there to see in the
mall.

Paragraph B. Passive sentences

When Boredom Strikes

Why can’t I see my friends anymore? Why can’t I see them in person?
One day, I have freaked out. The movies in Netflix were being watched
by me. The 580 pages book has been done reading. A lot of errands have
been done at home. The rummage in my room had been tidied up. The
laundry was already done. My pet dog has been given a dog bath and a
smooth spray.
Just then , I heard my mom started the engine. She was about to go
out for groceries when the idea of coming with her came up. I’m full of
excitement to think that finally I will be gotten to check what is there to see
in the mall.

What is It

W hat do we mean by "voice"? A voice of a verb tells us whether

the subject of a sentence does the action (= the active voice) or is affected by
it (= the passive voice).

Examples:

 Given this sentence, "Yaell climbed the tree”, the verb "climbed" is in
the active voice. In other words, the form "climbed" shows that the
subject (Yaell) did the active voice. This what makes the sentence
"Yaell climbed the tree" in the active voice.

 While in this sentence, "The tree was climbed by Yaell," the verb "was
climbed" is in the passive voice. In other words, the form "was
climbed" shows that the subject (The tree) was affected by the action.
This what makes also the sentence "The tree was climbed by Yaell" in
the passive voice.
The active voice is commonly used in writing. It occurs when the subject
comes first before the verb and the subject is the one doing the action of the
sentence. The passive voice, however, focus attention on the person or thing
affected by the action. When a passive voice takes two objects, an indirect or
direct object, the indirect object becomes the subject, but we can also use the
direct object as the subject. Both two forms are possible.

Let us examine again these examples. Notice that the subject is doing the
action. These sentences are in the active voice.
• John gives a present to the little boy.
(subject) (verb)
• Carlos Bulosan revealed the reality about social discrimination.
(subject) (verb)
• The old man accused the poor family of stealing the spirit of his
(subject) (verb) family’s food by smelling.
• The judge pounded the gravel.
(subject) (verb)
• My brothers threw a small change in a straw hat.
(subject) (verb)

Here are other set of sentences. The subject of the sentence this time receives
the action of the verb. These sentences are in the passive voice.

• The money is thrown in the garbage can.

( active verb – throws: passive verb – is thrown )

5
• The issue about racial discrimination was argued by Mandela.
( active verb – argued : passive verb – was argued )

• The unexpected ending was shown in the story.

( active verb – shown : passive verb – was shown
• The essay was written by my son.
(active verb – written : passive verb – was written
• A small change was deleted in the file of my computer.
(active verb – deleted : passive verb – was deleted

Active and Passive Voice Comparison

an active voice expert.

Be guided with this formula in forming your sentences.
