Tutorial in Technical Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer I

Exercise sheet 1

Exercise 1.1 (A01)

A pressure container with a volume of 3 m3 has to be tested to withstand a pressure of 200 bar.
As testing fluids for pressurizing, water and pressurized air are available in sufficient quantities.

Decide and explain descriptively which of the two media you would choose as test fluid!

Exercise 1.2 (A02)

A a gas-filled cylinder is closed by a piston. Explain how the pressure in the cylinder will change
qualitatively if

a) the piston is fixed and the temperature is increased.

b) the piston is moved in a way which increases the enclosed volume at constant temperature.

c) at constant temperature and fixed piston the mass of the gas in the cylinder is increased.

Exercise 1.3 (A04)

A constant–volume gas thermometer filled with helium displays the pressures p1 = 1.333 bar
and p2 = 1.821 bar at the temperatures t1 = 0 ◦ C and t2 = 100 ◦ C, respectively.

a) Specify an equation that describes the temperature T as a linear function of the pressure
p.

b) In temperature equilibrium with the ambience, the thermometer displays 1.431 bar. What
is the ambient temperature? Apply the equation developed in part a).
