Worksheet #2 – Best Normal Order
1. What are the steps for arriving at NO?
- First you take you group of notes. Then, you order them in ascending order, covering the
least amount of space on a staff.
2. What are the reasons to invert a set?
- If the smallest interval is not the farthest to the left, you have to invert it to get the group
of notes left compacted.
3. What are the steps for inverting a set?
- First you invert the order of the pitches, then figure out your new group of notes based on
this order. You then rewrite these pitches and the last pitch should be the same as the last
pitch in NO.
4. What is BNO, and how is BNO different from NO?
- BNO is the same as NO, except the pitches need to be left compacted.
5. What do the numbers of the Prime Form of a set represent?
- The numbers represent how many half steps it takes to get to that pitch from the lowest
note.
6. What are the steps for arriving at the Prime Form of a set?
- You do the same steps as you do for getting the BNO, then you rewrite your pitches, and
label the lowest note as 0. From the lowest note, you will count up to each individual
pitch and label how many half steps it takes to get to each pitch.
7. What is meant by the term Forte Set Number?
- The Forte Set Number the set of numbers that are assigned to certain pitch class sets in
Prime Form.
8. What are the steps for arriving at the FS#?
- You do the same steps as you do for getting the Prime Form of a set, then you take the
Prime Form and insert it into an online calculator, and it will give you the FS#.
