BITS, PILANI, GOA CAMPUS, SECOND SEMESTER 2016 – 2017

TEST – 2: Heat Transfer (CLOSED BOOK)

COURSE CODE: CHE F241

DATE: 28/03/2017 TIME: 1HR MAX. MARKS: 20

(ALL QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY. MAKE SUITABLE ASSUMPTIONS WHEREVER NECESSARY)

Question 1 [8 marks]

The heat exchange in a certain chemical process is involved from metal surface to distilled water. A number of
thin metal rectangular fins each 70 mm long and 3.5 mm thick are provided to increase the heat transfer rate
and their ends are attached to an insulated wall. In order to prevent ionization of water, the metal fins are
coated with 0.12 mm layer of plaster. The mean water temperature and temperature at the base of the fin are
30 oC and 90 oC respectively. The thermal conductivity of the fin material and plastic are 205 W/m.oC and 0.52
W/m.oC respectively. If the heat transfer coefficient between the plastic coating and water is 250 W/m2.oC.
Calculate

 The temperature at the tip of the fin

 Fin efficiency

For a rectangular cross-section, assuming m = (2U)/ky, where U is the overall heat transfer coefficient due
to layer of plastic coating on the metallic fin and y is the thickness of the fin

Question 2 [6 marks]

An egg (approximated as a sphere) with a mean diameter of 40 mm and initially at 20 oC is placed in a boiling
water (saturated at 101325 Pa) pan for 4 minutes and found to be boiled to consumer’s taste. For how long
should a similar egg for the same consumer be boiled when taken from a refrigerator at 5 oC. Take the
following properties for the egg:

k = 10 W/m.oC,  = 1200 kg/m3, c = 2 kJ/kg.oC and h = 100 W/m2.oC.

Question 3 [6 marks]

A metal clad heating element of 10 mm diameter and emissivity 0.92 is submerged in a water bath horizontally.
If the surface temperature of the metal is 260 oC under steady boiling conditions calculate the power
dissipation per unit length for the heater. Assume that water is exposed to atmospheric pressure and is uniform
temperature. The thermo-physical properties of water at 100 oC are

L = 958.4 kg/m3, hfg = 2257 kJ/kg and h = 100 W/m2.oC.

The thermo-physical properties of steam at 260 oC are

v = 4.807 kg/m3, cpv = 2.56 kJ/kg.K, v = 14.85  106 N.s / m2 and kv = 0.0331 W/m.oC.

hconvection = 0.62 [Numerator / Denominator]1/4 where Numerator is [kv3v(L  v)g(hfg + 0.4 cpvTexcess)]

and Denominator is (vDTexcess)
