WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH

EXODUS 3:12(NIV) & JOHN 4:23-24 (NKJV)

STEPHEN K. AMPONSAH
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH – The WHAT

•EXODUS 3:12 (NIV);

12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to
you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the
people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

JOHN 4:23 & 24 (NKJV);

23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must

worship in spirit and truth.”

WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT
•True worship is unhindered and it starts from the heart.
•To worship God means to honor God from within.
•The worship of God must come from a pure and childlike
heart/motive.
•You cannot worship God the way you want, you must worship
God His way.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT
•Many of us are not in truth when we are worshipping God; we are even
afraid of what He would tell us in worship.
•True worshippers; Worship the Father in Spirit and Truth; The Father is
seeking such to worship Him.
•God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
•God is Spirit, so we must be spirits as well because God created us in His image and
likeness.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT
•Jesus told the woman this in response to what the woman said.-vrs 20.
“Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the
place where one ought to worship.”
Questions for reflection:
•Can I truly worship God?
•Is it possible for a man to worship God in spirit and in truth?
•What does it mean to worship God the Father in Spirit and Truth?
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT
•God created man for fellowship; (The word ‘fellowship’ means fellows in the
same boat/ship).
•Note that as a man, you cannot fellowship with a tree or a cat etc. You can
only fellowship with your kind.
•Again, God created man for intimacy: In Genesis 2: 8-25; God planted
garden eastward of Eden. And put man in this Garden.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT
•Let’s remember that God created man with His word; the bible says in John
1:3 that in Him (the word) was all things created and without Him was
nothing made that was made.
•And in Genesis 2:7, God breathe the breath of life into Man, which
symbolizes His Spirit, and man became a living being; A form of God (Gen
1:26) because we were made in His image and according to His likeness.
•And as such, we could fellowship and have intimacy with Him which
represented our worship of Him.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

•But in Genesis 3:23, when man sinned in the Garden of Eden, God drove
man out of His presence, the place of fellowship, the place of intimacy.
“..therefore the Lord God sent him OUT of the garden of Eden to till the ground from
which he was taken.”
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

•Again, when man sinned in the Garden of Eden, we died and what that
means is that we moved out of the realm of God.
•That death simply means, man got separated from God.
•Our family members who have died have not ceased to exist, they have
simply moved from our realm into another realm.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

•Since the fall of man, God through His loving kindness has given us a shadow of how He
wanted man to relate with Him.
•In Exodus 3:12; God rescued the Israelites from the Land of Egypt, so that they may go onto
the mountains to worship God. Let my people Go, so that they may worship me.
•“12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you:
When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
•We were rescued to worship. Egypt symbolizes slavery, bondage, sickness, etc. We were
taking from the life of slavery and adopted into sonship for true worship.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

•You may worship in your slavery to sin, but true worshippers is what the father is seeking
for. A worship born out of the Spirit and the Word (Jesus).
•To worship in Spirit means to worship with the Spirit of God: The Holy Spirit
•To worship in Truth means to worship with the Word of God: Jesus Christ
•To worship in Spirit and in Truth is to worship in the Spirit of God, with the Word of God
to God the Father.
•A worship void of the Spirit and the Word has no meaning and its void of power.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHAT

•No wonder Jesus preached salvation first to the Samaritan woman. The
needed to accept Jesus into her life. (vrs 14)
•Believers, to worship God is not when we come to church and sing songs and
hymns. It is a part of it but it is not all of it.
•Paul understood this and said in Romans 12: 1 that I beseech you by the
mercies of God that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice to God,
Holy and Acceptable to God, which is your reasonable/true art of
worship/service.
•Worship of God is a lifelong calling. God has called us to worship.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHY

•What does worship in Spirit and In truth do for the believer?

• (WHY WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH?)

•It sustains and maintains THE PRESENCE OF GOD with the Believer.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHY

1. In Exodus 33:3; God said, God up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will
not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.
Then Moses pleaded: in verse 14: And He said, My presence will go with you and I will
give you rest.
God told the Israelites that I am rescuing you to come and worship me. When they
worshipped other gods, the wanted to depart from them. Moses prayed and interceded and
asked God that if your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.
-The presence of God is the reward for true worship.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH -The WHY
2. In Psalm 51: A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after the incident
with Bathsheba.
David said in vrs 11: Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take Your Holy
Spirit from me.
-In Genesis 4:16: So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of
Eden.
David, sinned and in his prayers said; God do not take your presence away from me. David understood
that the presence of God meant everything to Him. Your life of worship would sustain the presence of
God in your life.
-The Presence of God is your security. It is your insurance policy.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHY

•3. God’s Presence Attracts the Right People;

If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How
will anyone know that You are pleased with me and with Your people
unless You go with us? What else will distinguish me and Your people
from all the other people on the face of the earth? (Exodus 33:15-16)
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHY

•4. God’s Presence Gives Rest;

And He said, My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.
(Exodus 33:14b)
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The WHY

•4. God’s Presence Brings Joy;

You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in
Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand (Psalm 16:11).
God’s presence is the source of joy. If you want to have
more joy in your life, spend more time with God. Then the
spirit of heaviness that hangs on you will lift as God
changes your attitudes and perspectives
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - The HOW

• Be born- again: to qualify you to have the spirit of God to worship God in
spirit and in truth.- John 3:5
•Build yourself up in your most holy faith and praying in the holy spirit- Jude
1: 20.
•Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.- Gal 4:16
•Increase your word base by reading and meditating on the word of God.-
Psalm 1:2, Taking your personal devotions seriously. Your date with God.
WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH - CONCLUSION

• God is calling us into a daily fellowship and intimacy with Him – A life long
calling of complete surrender of our life to Him.
•Our Worship of God must be born out of complete obedience to Him.
Worship in spirit and truth is not possible in a life of disobedience- Check the
story of Saul.
•Worshipping God in spirit and truth is possible with help of the Holy Spirit.
